Nonfiction - Between Two Rivers by Moudhy Al-Rashid & Mythica by Emily Hauser really stick out

linghams.co.uk/event/lingha... I've left it a little late to promote this - sorry. But for anyone very local who has an hour to spare, I'll be at the amazing Linghams Bookstore later this morning to do book club things about #TheWagerandtheBear Exciting!

As we get to the very end of June I thought I'd post my top reads of the year so far (from books that are already published)
As I read a pretty much 50/50 split of fiction & non fiction I thought I'd do the same here but it was far harder to narrow the non fiction down!

23.06.2025 09:11 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I finished โThe Wager and the Bearโ - probably the most frankly didactic novel Iโve read in ages (that wasnโt a 19th-century one). It tells a pretty good story too, but it left me feeling quite bleak. In so many areas we know the right thing to do but just donโt do it. ๐ข

A man with neat white hair and a white beard smiles at the camera. He is wearing a petrol blue rugby style shirt with a white collar. He is smiling gently at the camera. His head and shoulders are visible and behind him the blurred background is varying shades of sand brown and sky blue.
The Tyne Bridge is pictured in the centre of the frame over a still, reflective River Tyne in Newcastle, UK. Either side of the bridge are buildings with a warmer glow as the sun rises. The words Northern Voices in white lettering feature in the bottom centre of the image.
'I think everyone should be writing about climate change.'

Screenshot reads: In a pub in a coastal town in Cornwall, in The Wager And The Bear by John Ironmonger (Fly on the Wall Press, ยฃ11.99), a boy named Tom, whoโs been studying earth sciences at university, is back home for the summer and catching up on what heโs missed in the way of local gossip and local cider. When the constituencyโs MP, a pompous climate-denier, enters the pub, tipsy Tom can't resist goading him into an argument. Someoneโs phone films the politicianโs humiliation, and the resulting video comes to frame the rest of both menโs lives, spent in a world of rising seas and vanishing clouds. Yes, this is another climate change novel; yet another one, as those who are beginning to fear theyโll spend every day between now and the end of the world reading climate change novels might groan. But this one is fun. Ironmongerโs settings are explorable, and his characters the more intriguing the more you get to know them. His writing is warm and witty; this may well be a book youโll read more than once. Itโll sing different songs to different readers. What I heard was the importance of avoiding capture by pessimism or optimism, those vampiric impostors, and instead finding a praxis that is based on realism, hope and above all on doing.
What a fantastic review for The Wager and the Bear @johnironmonger.bsky.social in #themorningstar, thank you!
