Yes, being able to bypass the muffler (and catalytic converter in modern cars) means the engine doesn't have to work as hard to pump the exhaust out of the cylinders. It makes engines just slightly more thermally efficient. You gain some horsepower from it, but how much depends on the system.

The truck Enya drives comes stock with an exhaust cutout. You'll hear her and her 6.5L T head 4 cylinder coming from a mile away.
