Suuri osa maapallon eliölajeista on vielä tuntemattomia. Valtaosa niistä elää tropiikissa, mutta voi uusia lajeja löytää läheltäkin. Viime vuonna Suomesta kuvattiin mm. uusi sienilaji, suomenseitikki.
