Bit like novels in verse: when the author makes great use of the white space of the page I could just "read" that page in a millisecond, but if I'm enjoying the story and pacing then I spend longer on that page to properly feel the impact of the words. Another style of reading that needs practice!

I am generally terrible at reading comics because I skim read & so don't look at the page properly, but there are a few that have caught me enough to slow down...or once I've skimmed them go back to the beginning to take them in properly.

True. I've been a step removed from parents for a while now (except parents of Bea's cohort, & I don't have to be polite to them if they continue that nonsense). Most of my teachers agree with me...or won't vocally disagree in earshot of me 😅

These people have forgotten that the first texts they read were a few short words & think they dived straight into full paragraphs of academic text...& that comics can similarly be pitched at either end of the scale. Maybe they've just not found the one that will spark their interest in trying.

I love Poonam Mistry's illustrations so much (thanks from me to @templarbooks.bsky.social too!) #KidLitUK

I'd always say (to a reluctant parent) that reading a comic is actually hard work & develops concentration & comprehension because you have to really focus to take in the text & the illustration & the framing & sequencing all at once to understand the story...& sometimes struggle with it!

@wabbits.bsky.social has house rabbits & loves them, but I have a feeling she'd not recommend them as a family pet...

I'm always nervous of adaptations of my favourite books 😬 but Bea is very excited by the prospect of a Murder Most Unladylike series

Got sent a book that references HP in the opening pages, so that's another book I don't need to bother reading

Help us support Girlguiding and the Women’s Institute to remain inclusive | Good Law Project We’re offering to defend the Women’s Institute and Girlguiding against trans exclusion

Girlguiding and the Women’s Institute say that they have been left with no choice but to exclude trans people, even though they don’t want to.

This is outrageous – and we want to defend them. Help us do that here🛡️👇

100% agree on all these recs, Don't Trust Fish was my fave of 2025. I though about adding Klassen to mine but decided to leave perfection alone! Also reckon that a lot of Nadia Shireen's picture books span ages & would be a great share.
