the only silver lining is it was a long time coming, as they started attempting it in February. The thing that is terrifying is if they attempt to invalidate existing passports.

If issued prior to the Trump administration, those passports are still preemptively valid until the expiration date. The administration could attempt to invalidate those but it would be subject to a court fight.

Gender markers shouldn't even be on passports at all in the first place. They are unnecessary and I'm glad Justice Jackson hints at this. They weren't even added until 1972 when women started to be able to travel independently of their husbands and fathers.
