I'm sure the West Coast line is also nice but we were not blessed by being able to see that 🫠🫠🫠 Currently arriving in Newcastle after a speed along the coast and honestly it's starting to make the whole debacle worth it!
So, we got stuck in Scotland overnight and ended up in EDINBURGH, doing a mini Research Culture Scottish tour. You'll be relieved to hear we are now en route home, seeing the most gorgeous views from the East Coast train.
Each month we collate a playlist for our Research Culture newsletter readers. This month, we're celebrating LGBTQIA+ artists. As it's Friday, why not start the weekend disco now?: youtube.com/playlist?lis...

Energising day at the N8 Research Culture and Environment group away day in Durham today. Somehow managed to drag my arthritic body up all the hills, which paid dividends for a lovely meander to the station along the river on the way back. Watch this space for some emerging N8 RCE insights!!
I am truly entering my podcast era 🎙
Thanks so much to @elainagmamaril.bsky.social for having me and letting me talk about the place of disability in research culture (amongst many other things!).
I'm a podcast!
Blue was very sad to discover that you're all very sad today? Because of him? Even stopped playing with his pumpkin toy when he heard about it.
🆕The #ResearchCultureUncovered podcast's back in 2026! @nickshepp.bsky.social talks to @jsendall.bsky.social about his career in academic libraries culminating in his recent appointment as Acting Librarian & Keeper of the Brotherton Collection at the @universityofleeds.bsky.social.
When people ask what my job is, I often say 'Wikipedia' but in reality it's more wide-ranging now than ever: here's a little blog post about what Topics for Impact could look like in 2026 and what I've been up to lately.

See you next year!
On this final full week before Christmas, and just in time for the end of #DisabilityHistoryMonth, why not read my interview with Armineh and Liz on how ableism presents itself in the HE sector, and how we've collectively and individually navigated it as disabled people.
Our take on the REF un-pause and the movement away from "Research Culture" (in name, but not necessarily in spirit!).
This is a fantastic opportunity from MERL!

Break from work posts to mention that I've just completed Stride for Gaza, walking 98km for MAP. Pre-arthritis, I'd have run it. But my sore knees are nothing compared to ongoing suffering and atrocities in Palestine. 🇵🇸You can still donate here: medicalaidforpalestinians.enthuse.com/pf/emily-ennis

I found this an excellent way to end #HiddenREF2025 yesterday. While it's important we get diverse roles and outputs the recognition they deserve - i.e. through the REF - often the REF itself can feel anti-research culture. For me, REF is a competition, but research culture is about community.
Food justice: equitable access to healthy, sustainable & affordable food.
Our researchers work with community-based partners to explore how research can have real terms impact on place-based, community-led food initiatives.
We interviewed 2 researchers & a community-based partner to hear more 👇
Check out a lovely article about improvements to hygiene in the polar regions! Something EDICa's research also found is still an issue.
Read here for their practical changes as well as challenges - like finding niche clothing for females, & waste management.
