Her contributions have been recognised with awards including UofG Future World Changer (2018) and Top 50 Women in Engineering finalist (2022).

Sofiat is also the founder of Computer Science Academy Africa (CSA Africa), which has trained 700+ young Africans in Python programming across Nigeria, Rwanda, Kenya, and online.

Nkechi First is a filmmaker, writer, and media practitioner with a passion for storytelling, gender representation, and African cinema. We're delighted that she will join the JMS PhD Scholarship Programme in the School of Culture & Creative Arts.

The research critically examines how women in the industry challenge traditional narratives, reshape cultural perceptions, and navigate a male-dominated filmmaking space.

Through a combination of film analysis, interviews, and industry case studies, she highlights the creative and social impact of Nollywood’s women filmmakers. This work contributes to broader discourses on African cinema, feminist film theory, and representation in global media.

One of adulthood’s most painful things is realizing someone you think of as a friend doesn’t consider you a friend. There is no malice or acrimony or anything bad about it. It’s just a difference of some apt “German” word I don’t know.

She was director of The Public in West Bromwich and UK Research Manager for Black Artists and Modernism and Middlesex University.
