Walked into my geochem lab to find some amazing people organized my haphazard lab tape collection rainbow style and now my Monday is infinitely better πŸ§ͺ

Astronaut Leland Melvin in his orange NASA astronaut jumpsuit, with his two dogs climbing all over him.

Picture of a very old rock

I got to hold a really cool rock today! Inside are the oldest minerals ever dated (from our planet at least) 4.4 billion year old zircons from the Jack Hills of Australia!

Me to my kid: I need to write 6 pages for this grant and I only have 1 page done.

My kid: why did you pick a job that has so much homework??!? *laughs hysterically*

You have great recs so far - I’ll also add β€œA short history of nearly everything” by Bill Bryson - it is an incredibly fun read - but covers history of geology as a discipline (and biology and humanity) as well. Get the illustrated version if you can!

Thin section under plane polarized light, showing 3 big chunks of quartz sandstone separated by a "second generation" breccia of clast-rich dark colored matrix and then a "third generation" clast-poor laminated dark colored matrix (botryoidal habit) , with void spaces. Thin section under cross-polarized light, showing ~12 big chunks of quartz sandstone separated by a "second generation" breccia of clast-rich dark colored matrix and then a "third generation" clast-poor laminated dark colored matrix, with void spaces.

Some cool textures under the microscope showing multiple generations of iron & manganese oxide cements in brecciated Antietam Fm. (Cambrian depositional age) quartzite in the western Blue Ridge of Virginia.

Beautiful!! I’m such a sucker for iron and manganese oxides, and to see these cool results from a formation right in my own backyard is just stellar! I want to check these out with SEM/EDS (and micro-Raman while I’m dreaming) so badly! Very cool work

Wildfire smoke rising from the Blue Ridge mountains, tinged pink from the sunset

Forest fires in the Blue Ridge mountains means the kid’s school is closed again (third day running) tomorrow - last year we had no snow days. Can’t help but worry this is a new normal to have wildfire days instead of snow days…

A brown haired woman bundled up against the cold sitting on a rock next to a stream in Iceland.

Getting to be on @wgbh.org NOVA is, well, pretty amazing. Thanks to the incredible team of folks who made this happen. I suspect the whole series will be great - so check them all out as they drop! www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/vi...

Calling all biogeochemists! I am co-chairing this theme at Goldschmidt next year. We are looking for more sessions particularly on metabolisms of new phylogenetic lineages, evolution of microbial traits through time, or habitability and bio signatures in other planetary systems. Reach out! πŸ§ͺβš’οΈπŸ¦

Tips on how best to spoil a cat? The vet says Whittakers has a month to a year left (boo heart disease) and I want to give her the time of her life.
So please give me your recs for treats / food / toys / things that make your cat extra happy!

Giant puffball (large white nearly soccer ball size) with large circular sections removed. Kid boots in background for scale.

Sunday walk through the woods found us a giant puffball! Another critter had found it before us, but still a happy find!

Yours truly snuggling a tortoiseshell cat in the forest

Happy Caturday from the old lady cat Whittakers!

She escaped the confines of the house when we went on our forest walk and found us. She got carried for the rest of the walk because she deserves to be treated like the absolute queen/ruler of our home that she is.
