I got to hold a really cool rock today! Inside are the oldest minerals ever dated (from our planet at least) 4.4 billion year old zircons from the Jack Hills of Australia!

You have great recs so far - I’ll also add “A short history of nearly everything” by Bill Bryson - it is an incredibly fun read - but covers history of geology as a discipline (and biology and humanity) as well. Get the illustrated version if you can!
Some cool textures under the microscope showing multiple generations of iron & manganese oxide cements in brecciated Antietam Fm. (Cambrian depositional age) quartzite in the western Blue Ridge of Virginia.
Beautiful!! I’m such a sucker for iron and manganese oxides, and to see these cool results from a formation right in my own backyard is just stellar! I want to check these out with SEM/EDS (and micro-Raman while I’m dreaming) so badly! Very cool work
Forest fires in the Blue Ridge mountains means the kid’s school is closed again (third day running) tomorrow - last year we had no snow days. Can’t help but worry this is a new normal to have wildfire days instead of snow days…

She escaped the confines of the house when we went on our forest walk and found us. She got carried for the rest of the walk because she deserves to be treated like the absolute queen/ruler of our home that she is.
