If I was a formerly beloved author with more money than I could ever spend, I would simply not spend my life tweeting stupid shit. I'd go on holiday or something

I am, ultimately, very lucky that SL isn't my main job. But I still give it as much energy as I can because I love the creativity and the ability to support other creators, even if I can't always do that monetarily.

Support each other y'all. We make this community what it is

03.08.2025 14:15 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

And yeah, the more the costs rise without proper explanation for why it happens, etc, the smaller the pool of creators who can afford to participate, which then naturally isolates many people who are, for the most part, single traders or very small teams trying to keep themselves afloat.

I can't comment on US wages first hand as I'm UK based but I can say I've seen similar wage issues here. For instance, with my day job I'm on ยฃ28k a year. I'm very lucky to be on that.

The same job in other countries would easily be equivalent to ยฃ40-50k however.

03.08.2025 14:13 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 5    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

It mirrors the discussion on wages that people often encounter in work lives tbh. I've gotten in trouble before for transparency around mine, and I never get it.

Openness and discussion about business costs, etc, always helps positive actors. As does asking where the money goes, etc etc

03.08.2025 13:53 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 5    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I get your argument, it's very practical. And I'm not disagreeing with your point either, I'm simply noting that things are often not as simple as that.

03.08.2025 13:52 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

The transparency of the information from my own experience has been varying from the event side of things.

There are some events with very little communication across the board once you've signed up and paid your fees, and it can seem almost taboo to ask where these costs go.

We gotta be able to talk about this stuff. It's better for all positive actors: Event-runners, large and small creators, well-known and smaller bloggers, etc.

Without the space to discuss it, we all undervalue what we do.

03.08.2025 13:20 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Not to mention the blogging field, which (sans in the items themselves) often go unpaid, and yet have incredibly high expectations on them!

03.08.2025 13:20 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Creators often get asked for items for free, or to pay high up-front costs with little transparency.

Event owners, meanwhile, can often have a suspicious eye on them for many reasons, when they have to pay sim costs, design costs, build the sim, get placement for the event on other platforms, etc.

03.08.2025 13:20 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

There is so much expected of people involved in aspects of events and advertising on SL.

03.08.2025 13:20 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

All of which is to say: Let's not just think of the price itself as reasonable or not, but what goes into it, the engagement and organisation levels of the people running these events, and the transparency about how much the fees are reinvested and how much are pocketed.

03.08.2025 13:05 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 5    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Meanwhile, I've ran events that have had little to no advertising asking the same costs, or more, of ones that have a rigid markting plan. It makes creators feel exploited, as for many of us cost of setting up an event is untenable at best.

03.08.2025 13:04 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 5    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

The biggest events that top performers go to cost more, but they in turn have big awareness from Linden Labs and other platforms (e.g. Seraphim to name the obvious). The spend correlates to a measurable improvement in exposure, which makes that higher cost of entry more recoupable quickly.

03.08.2025 13:04 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 5    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

It also potentially (And I am 100% not saying you intended this) gives bad actors in the events space false justification for upping prices and not re-investing that into sim space, advertisement, etc. - Normalising the conversation around costs, and wanting transparency for where they go is fair.

03.08.2025 13:04 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 5    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

While there's always an argument for high-profile events charging more, I don't think that means raising concerns about other event costs is invalid.

It's a fair argument, but at the same time there are many events out there charging 3-5k for spots that then consistently don't return profit.

A gingerbread house booth filled with whipped cream, a pink-white cream ripple texture, strawberries, lemon slices, toffees and piped whipped cream. Inside, more whipped cream and sprinkles/hundred thousand decorated frames showcase product splashes for citrus gummy eyes, a bag of holdable sweets, an anime-inspired eye set and gender affirming scars. Atop this, a bird-eye logo for FLOCK, and the title of the brand, sit with black and gold colouration.

I implore people to look at new Second Life content and form their opinions because I'm kind of done with seeing, "People still use SL? That shit's old." and their example is from like 2007. We don't look like that now. You can look fantastic in SL with effort. Better than some VRC stuff! LMAO

It is harrowing to see an ardent cultural push to outright annihilate any and all explicit media. Personal experience in strict and intrusive environments has made it very clear eradication of any component culturally is not a valid avenue. It simply does not work.

I hate how people's worry over AI is now becoming a means for people to try and slight creators who haven't used it at all.

Vigilance and care is important, but baseless accusations are more damaging than people think. Ask the question, sure, but don't accuse people with it.
