A new study published in The Lancet, a prestigious peer-reviewed medical journal, estimates that 64,260 people were killed in Gaza between October 7, 2023, and June 30, 2024β€”41% higher than official reports. Nearly 60% of the dead were women, children, and the elderly.

Full text of April 2021 Human Rights Watch report that substantiates claims that Israel systematically commits apartheid and persecution of Palestinians. Both are what are called "crimes against humanity", which is a higher degree of severity under international law than mere "war crimes".

Both apologies refer simply to "mistakes". Whose? Why? How did these mistakes happen exactly? What steps are being taken to ensure accountability for these "mistakes"?

We need to hold German media accountable for its anti-Arab racism. We need robust journalistic integrity.

Case 2 apology: After the Dutch woman whose footage they used called them out, Tagesschau issued a partial correction and apology. However, they say only that 2a was incorrect and do not clarify that what the video actually shows is 2b.

Case 2: Tagesschau & Israeli hooligans
2a. Tagesschau ran video footage from a Dutch woman that they claimed depicted people, many of Arab descent, violently attacking Israelis.
2b. In reality, the video showed Israelis violently attacking people, many of Arab descent.

Case 1 apology: Berlin.de first corrected 1a and apologized for the "mistake" but left 1b intact. Then, after more outcry from activists, they quietly removed 1b but neither apologized for nor explained it.

Case 1: Berlin.de & "No Other Land"
1a. Berlin.de initially described the award-winning documentary "No Other Land" as having "antisemitic tendencies".
1b. This description also clarified that the film was made before the Hamas Oct. 7 attack, even though the film has nothing to do with Hamas.

In each case, there were TWO transgressions and only ONE of them was retracted and the subject of an apology. German media can be shamed into retracting offensive and false content but they absolutely refuse to acknowledge that anti-Arab racism shapes their framing.

Two recent cases of anti-Arab racism in German media have resulted in apologies, whichβ€”and I stressβ€”were *incomplete* and insufficient in crucial ways.

Case 1: Berlin.de & "No Other Land"
Case 2: Tagesschau & Israeli hooligans
