SoEx Spotlight: Summer Perritt is a History PhD candidate at Rice University.
Her dissertation looks to explain the impetus for the return migration of Black Americans to the U.S. South in the post-civil rights period, and its implications in the lives of migrants today.

Her dissertation explores the gap between northern philanthropists' perceptions of Black libraries in the Jim Crow South, and those libraries' actual programming and practice.
SoEx Spotlight: Sammie Chomsky is a PhD student in US History at the CUNY Graduate Center.
She is researching GROW (Grass Roots Organizing Work), a project aimed at organizing poor and working-class white people into interracial coalitions in the Deep South in the 1960s.
SoEx Spotlight: Leslie Garrote, a third-year PhD student at Baylor University, will be presenting her research on April 9th!
Her work focuses on issues of race and gender in American Evangelicalism at the turn of the 21st c, specifically in the racial reconciliation movement.
SoEx Spotlight: Sam Bisno, a Mitchell Scholar and MA student at Queen's University Belfast, will be discussing his thesis at SoEx on April 9!
His work lies at the intersection of labor, technology, slavery and emancipation, and capitalism.
SoEx Spotlight: Lauren Ashley Bradford is a Ph.D. candidate at the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark University.
Her dissertation, βWith Blood on Their Stockings,β investigates women's involvement in racial terror across Nazi Germany and Jim Crow America.
SoEx Spotlight: Katie Drash Mapes, an MA student at Virginia Commonwealth University, will be discussing her dissertation at Southern Exchanges on April 9!
She traces how the Marshall familyβs involvement in the domestic slave trade reflected and influenced shifts in slavery and masculinity.

Her work challenges the centrality of whiteness in discussions of race, focusing on interactions between Black and Indian peoples.
