My own game that resulted from the research does have stat and calendar and routes, but I wouldn't call it a dating sim despite my initial ambitions. I respect the genre, I just changed intents at a certain point.

I do return to Tokimemo for gameplay mechanics, though. Cannot beat the original.

Obviously that's less a "western devs making something that isn't actually a dating sim" and more "western online people being obtuse about the term and misapplying it" but yknow

I read DRAMAtical Murder as a teen because people called it a dating sim and I was trying to research the genre at the time. I came out of it thinking "well I'm not sure that was the right label but I guess that was something".

Anyway, this was all precipitated because I was thinking about how if I saw her character design when I first started watching anime as a kid I would've gone into a fugue state

Now, this is just conjecture on my part, but I think we've seen more rapid stylistic shifts post-y2k overall, so there's a bit more of a distinctive "before" style... but again, that's just me. Although, reboots do demonstrate just what's shifted in 30 years, I guess...

Admittedly, there is often a certain stylistic bleed-through from the 80s to the 90s, especially in adaptations, so the line gets a little fuzzy sometimes.

Like I've gone out of my way to watch a lot, and admittedly I could stand to watch more pre-80s, but whenever I watch something from around 95 specifically something switches in my brain and it registers as the truest form of anime to me, be it positive or negative

Yeah clearly you had the long lasting groundwork being laid in the 50s and 60s thereabouts, big splashes in the 70s, bubble economy 80s making shit go wild, but I think 90s will always be what anime is in my heart. My first conception of it.

There's something about an anime with bad character and plot writing but really good animation for very specific but inconsequential things and clear passion about very specific parts of the worldbuilding. Truly the 90s is the platonic ideal of anime to me.
