Europeans have better macro-level institutions (electoral, legislative) than 🇺🇸 that insulate against far right authoritarianism (so far, at least, isolating it to ~1/4-1/5 of electorates). But I think David is right on the meso/micro-level👇

Gold performs only one of the three functions of money (it is a store of value, neither a medium of exchange nor unit of account), & no one is moving into euros, yen, or RMB. This is definitely a hedge against uncertainty & exchange rate risk, but not the replacement of the $ by other currencies.

The cruelty is the point

In Minnesota, the Fight Against ICE Is Also the Fight Against Authoritarianism The community is pulling together. It has been eye-opening.

There isn't a perfect playbook for defeating authoritarianism, but we know from other countries that democratic resurgence is possible. I wrote for @slate.com about some of what we're seeing in Minnesota and why I believe, even now, that we will win.

Twice this week when meeting a new person I've gotten an excited "Wow, it must be an exciting time to be a political scientist!" and both times I've answered "Not really. That's like telling someone it's an exciting to be a surgeon when there's a 63 car pileup on the highway."

On NPR on Friday, there was a story of a 4-year-old--an American citizen--who hasn't left her house since early December, not even to play in the yard. And her 8-year-old brother recently stopped going to school, too. Their father is undocumented, and the family doesn't want to risk him being taken.
