Abolish the Pro Bowl
26.01.2026 19:49 β π 51 π 3 π¬ 4 π 0America's national political institutions are deeply broken, & lots of our societal institutions/leaders have failed to meet the moment. The platform must be institutional reform π
And yet, when you look at Minneapolis, you know we're going to win, & it's going to be πΊπΈ civil society that does it.
Shitcoins, you say? π€

Once again, allies are good, actually, & threatening to destroy this stuff should have already ended this presidency.
26.01.2026 19:23 β π 57 π 2 π¬ 3 π 0Once you've been through enough cycles, it becomes easier to see the candidate elites are trying to make happen vs. ones that have genuine popular appeal.

Europeans have better macro-level institutions (electoral, legislative) than πΊπΈ that insulate against far right authoritarianism (so far, at least, isolating it to ~1/4-1/5 of electorates). But I think David is right on the meso/micro-levelπ
So currencies. Much medium of exchange. Very store of value.

The pathological inability (really, unwillingness) to engage with either political realities or the English language
26.01.2026 16:35 β π 60 π 9 π¬ 5 π 1I hope the last two days have brought home to European leaders the perils involved with lavishly praising Trump. America is on a precipice and is now struggling for its redemption. If the right side wins, it will look askance at those who sucked up to Trump.

For the love of all that is holy just talk to a political scientist
They not only know theyβre going to lose, theyβre saying it out loud now.
26.01.2026 15:48 β π 243 π 44 π¬ 5 π 0Among the many things I have been deeply wrong about since 2016 was my misguided hope that Steve Scalise would become a slightly better human being, with slightly less hateful & authoritarian politics, after having his life saved by Crystal Griner. Alas, sadly Dennis Green z"l was right again.

26.01.2026 15:05 β π 146 π 24 π¬ 3 π 1Gold performs only one of the three functions of money (it is a store of value, neither a medium of exchange nor unit of account), & no one is moving into euros, yen, or RMB. This is definitely a hedge against uncertainty & exchange rate risk, but not the replacement of the $ by other currencies.

26.01.2026 05:31 β π 97 π 19 π¬ 1 π 0There isn't a perfect playbook for defeating authoritarianism, but we know from other countries that democratic resurgence is possible. I wrote for @slate.com about some of what we're seeing in Minnesota and why I believe, even now, that we will win.

Twice this week when meeting a new person I've gotten an excited "Wow, it must be an exciting time to be a political scientist!" and both times I've answered "Not really. That's like telling someone it's an exciting to be a surgeon when there's a 63 car pileup on the highway."
26.01.2026 01:37 β π 971 π 133 π¬ 20 π 24On NPR on Friday, there was a story of a 4-year-old--an American citizen--who hasn't left her house since early December, not even to play in the yard. And her 8-year-old brother recently stopped going to school, too. Their father is undocumented, and the family doesn't want to risk him being taken.
