Research has an economic return multiplier >1. So taxes don't even really pay for research. Research more than pays for itself, the taxes are just used to kick-start the positive economic cycle. The more money invested in research, the better the economy.

New preprint from our lab! Given the importance of nucleotide synthesis for AML cells, and the fact that aspartate is essential for nucleotide synthesis, we wondered if exogenous aspartate uptake through EAAT transporters plays a role in this cancer.

The EAAT1 aspartate/glutamate transporter is dispensable for acute myeloid leukemia cell growth and response to therapy https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.07.13.664609v1

Yet, we currently cannot exclude a role for this amino acid as nutrient for AML cells in the bone marrow, which contains high levels of aspartate. Congrats to first author HernΓ‘n Andres Tirado and all co-authors, and thanks to our funders! @uclouvain.bsky.social F.R.S.-FNRS, FCC, de Duve Institute

We found that AML cells only express EAAT1, but after extensive testing conclude that this transporter is not essential for AML cells. Moreover, exogenous aspartate is not needed for AML cell growth or response to chemotherapy in vitro.
