Some insights into 18th-century festive traditions and innovations from Penny Corfield, among them the very term 'Boxing Day', coined by the Georgians in honour of the 'Christmas boxes' offered up with gifts of money in them.

Both white with black silhouettes. Larger mug with George III shows him in profile, a gilded ribbon below with the motto INTEGRITY and a gold formal border around the rim of the mug. Smaller mug: Queen Chrlotte in profile, flanked by ribbons bearing the motto VIRTUE'S HER SHIELD. In generally good condition, but gilding worn in places. Did not bid.

This satire published May 1818 claims to be the last work of James Gillray. It features the irony of judges and magistrates getting shaved and cleaned before donning godawful old wigs to preside in court

Painting of a woman in her 30s, wearing elaborate 18th-century clothing. Her hair is powdered grey and piled high in a fashionable style, she wears pearl earrings and a pearl necklace, and a frilly lilac dress with white cuffs and collar, sitting on a pink chair with drapery behind and a crown in the background.

Look out for a new post coming from the Georgian Lords tomorrow, when we will be welcoming @nemgarrett.bsky.social as a guest writer for the series, looking into Queen Charlotte and her reputation at the time of the Regency Crisis.

Close up view of the red coats buttons side and a partial view of the sleeve cuff with its buttons, same type button but smaller in size, we also see parts of a waistcoat of white color with blue, red narrow stripes.

Close up of one button, needlework button, it is made of embroidery threads worked and woven for hand to cover a base button or disc, the base isn’t visible. The color is reddish orange, lighter in color than fabric. Not sure if it is as intended or if it was more matched to the deep red of coat but faded.

Mannequin of a man wearing 1750s fashion - jacket, waistcoat and breeches made of woven silk brocade, all same fabric, unembellished. The brocade is cream and some red color, the source say cerise but it looks not vibrant to me. The abstract motif is symmetrical and consists of waves of some kind and flowers. There’s also a hat, ribbons on hair, shoes, walking stick and an sword of some kind (I’m sorry I don’t have much knowledge on swords!)

Here’s a map of c.1830 showing both London Bridges coexisting. This is why the church of St Magnus-the-Martyr (which formed the northern gateway to the medieval bridge) is misaligned with the current bridge. See my blog post at:
