A short-eared owl is a medium-sized bird, roughly the size of a crow or small gull, often seen hunting during the day over open fields, marshes, and coastal areas. Its appearance is defined by a mottled, sandy-yellow and brown body, which helps it blend in with dry grass.

Distinctive Face: They have a pale, whitish facial disc with bright, intense yellow eyes that are famously surrounded by black, kohl-like rims, giving them a fierce, staring expression.

The "Ears": The "ears" (or ear tufts) are actually tiny, very short, and often hidden against their head, making them difficult to spot.

Flight and Body: They have long, rounded wings with dark, comma-shaped marks near the wrist (on the underside) and a buff-coloured, streaked chest. They fly with a slow, buoyant, and silent, moth-like wingbeat, often held in a slight 'V' shape (dihedral).

Behaviour: Unlike many owls, they are commonly active during the day (especially dawn and dusk), often seen perching on the ground in rough grassland or flying low over the ground while hunting for voles.
