This skews the way people think about NYC and how it is portrayed in the news. Even many New Yorkers seem to be unaware that most people living in NYC come from somewhere else.

Even those films and TV shows about the immigrant experience usually focus on second or third generation New Yorkers. Meanwhile, films and TV shows most often completely ignore Americans who have relocated to NYC.

Interesting factoid: 63% of New York city residents were not born in NYC, and about 36.5% were born in a foreign country. Oddly, films and TV shows have always overwhelmingly presented NYC as mostly populated by people born here, missing the true story of this city.

It could make them fans of Hitler if not handled with care.
