The Johnson Publishing Company building was the 1st downtown Chicago high-rise commissioned by a Black-owned company & designed by a Black architect. John W. Moutoussamy designed the building, successfully avoiding the “glass box” trend of the late ’60s.

A close-up of numerous dog tags hanging from thin wires, part of an art installation. The tags are densely packed, creating a textured, almost cascading effect.
A spacious library with tall, filled bookshelves lining the walls. A central wooden table is surrounded by chairs. The floor is polished wood.
A person stands on a balcony of a Brutalist-style apartment building, characterized by its repetitive geometric shapes and concrete surfaces. The structure is composed of numerous identical units arranged in a grid pattern. Some windows are illuminated, suggesting occupation within.
A white surface with a grid of circular holes, each revealing warm, soft lighting behind them, creating a pattern of illuminated circles.

Chicago lore gets a little...fuzzy up high. 🤥
The Stratosphere Club existed at the top of the Jeweler's Building, but not as a speakeasy, and not with Al Capone.
When it opened in 1937, Prohibition was over and Al was in Alcatraz.
