To achieve this kaleidoscopic effect, Simone reversed one of the six glass elements in an analogue lens. This distorted the image at the edges while leaving the centre sharply focused.

This 1163-year-old cedar tree stump from the Niagara Escarpment holds annual climate records in its tree rings. These yearly records coincide with the sediment records in nearby Crawford Lake.

When fossil fuels such as the coal in this bag are burned, small particles called fly ash are released into the air. Crawford Lake’s sediments capture a dramatic increase in fly ash in the 1950s, coinciding with rapid industrialization locally and globally.

Expanded by 3,500 square feet, the gallery will reopen to the public on December 5 and feature new interactives and displays – including the permanent return of Zuul, one of the best-preserved dinosaurs ever found.
