05.10.2025 02:22 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I think Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is trying to be the pivot for a Kaiju / Mecha universe that brings Pacific Rim into the fold.
And yes, I am enjoying it.
I'm also saying to authors don't feel pressured into hitting a "novel length word count".

I guess I'm suggesting that rather than fire 120,000 words at people and then complain literacy is suffering, we might want to celebrate less daunting works.
04.10.2025 00:31 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Short length doesn't necessarily equal "less plot" either. Again, I think brevity equals a singular focus without the distracting side quests.
04.10.2025 00:31 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This verboseness puts a pressure on the author to be "different" in their descriptions. Result: thesaurus fuelled word salad.
04.10.2025 00:31 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I like novellas because their short length forces an efficiency in writing that lets the reader fill in the gaps.
Way too many of the contemporary novels I've read of late try to force feed the reader exactly how they should perceive a scene or character.
Is this why we're losing readers?
Finally watched #Greyhound. That's a brilliant, tight, short, to the point film.
Could do with more like this.
I have a similar issue with Japanese. I'll be struggling to catch every third word and then someone throws in an English word and my brain goes...
"I know this! Such a relief! Wow! Now, what was everyone doing?"
...and that's me done for the day.
Times change. Things move on. Old knowledge is lost and, if it has value, is rediscovered.
Meanwhile those whose power comes from "knowing everything" cling to their worthless databases as their knowledge rots away.
How is this different from text books going out of print, falling apart, ending up in landfill.
Or the plays written by contemporaries of Bill S now lost - or those he cribbed from.
Or the many oral legends that somehow came together to be The Odyssey or Robin Hood?
Have finished the "Director's Cut". Conclusion:
Very much an "and then this happens" story.
Left me with no real sense of who or what drove the grumpy bugger.

I'm watching Napoleon and thinking:
1. Why does he look about 50 in his twenties?
2. Why does he mumble?
Bye, Yukio.
#Invasion isn't that good.
Problem with #Invasion is every time Yamato Mitsuki appears on screen, I wave frantically and cry out, "Hi, Yukio".

When a surgeon turns up dead it throws Maku at the heart of corruption in his old police unit. Can the disgraced ex-cop find redemption?

Mr Milchick in #severance has moments where he sounds like HAL.
Unrelated: what's with the Volvos?
Why is Severance considered "dystopian"?
It's like a few corporates I've worked in and had no idea why they hired me.
Kellie Marie Tran getting screwed over by Star Wars is a hill I'll die on.
The whole "Rose" storyline was pointless, the "backlash" bizarre and a talent wasted.
I like the character and enjoy the performance (until the end, then it sort of sucked).
Anyway, guess what I'm rewatching....
Severance Series 1 I'm finding quite disorienting in a good way.
28.08.2025 13:21 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0First series is tight, moves at pace and works well.
Second series starts to bring in more "family drama" elements that distracted. I think they could've lost a couple of episodes worth of hand wringing.
Third series opener was daft it went downhill from there.
Given up on For All Mankind.
Let's see what's all the fuss about with Severance.
Should have mentioned this is For All Mankind
24.08.2025 12:13 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Two episodes in and the third series is not great.
Any chance someone can make a sci-fi show where sci-fi happens instead of stalkers, family dramas and monologues.
Second series of For All Mankind would be a lot tighter and better if they scrapped most of the personal drama stuff.
Think it's a good example of looking to fill a runtime.
I'm going to get ChatGPT to beg forgiveness.

21.08.2025 00:02 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0There's one more waiting to be edited, then I think I'll rest the character for a little while.
I have some other ideas I want to explore.
Finished the latest "Maku" novelette. Just need to get it formatted and exported to ePub.
