Interestingly, I'd remembered the L P Hartley quote as 'The past is another country, etc..', when in fact he says 'foreign country'. Still, I suppose what applies to the past applies even more obviously to other countries.

I learned just the other day that in the vanguard of the anti-Semitic campaign against Dreyfus in France in the 1890s was a weekly called Free Speech (La Libre parole).

England is now experiencing a significant Covid wave, after 10 months of relative quiet The latest Covid situation in England and a look at where NHS services are as we head into winter

After a long pause, I've just done another England Covid & NHS update as we head into the autumn/winter season.

TLDR: we're in a significant Covid wave now, the NHS is stretched, get boosted if you're eligible.

It's odd to think that, at 45, Kemi Badenoch is one of the very youngest Tory voters of all.

It doesn't seem to be stated explicitly, but I think the key thing is this: which type a verb is doesn't seem to depend on its surface form (the spelling or pronunciation of the present, e.g.).

A quick scout around suggests that there are basically two types of verb: those that change the vowel in the past tense (like 'grow'), and those which add 't' or 'ed' at the end (like 'glow'). I think the first is older, and there's a tendency to shift from the first to the second.

I'm afraid it's not specific to UCL, despite the presence of Bentham's body there. We had the same system at Sussex quite a few years ago. You're just lucky you were able to hold out so long.

I would add one thing: we are bombarded with two claims: 1) the UK can leave the ECHR without lowering human rights protection and 2) the ECHR significantly limits what the government can do and hence the UK has to leave it.
These cannot both be true. /1
