Theatre stage.

Theatre stage.

Theatre night in Lyon at Le Repaire de la comédie, a small Cafe theatre in the city center. This is the tiny stage. There must be 70 seats max.
I love that these places stay alive nowadays.
It's fully booked 🤩

Discourse on Voluntary Servitude by Etienne de La Boétie – highly recommended. Discourse on Voluntary Servitude by Etienne de la Boétie (1546 or 1548) Original French title : Discours de la Servitude volontaire. I have a project regarding 18th century literature this year and I thought I ought to read Discourse on Voluntary Servitude by Etienne de La Boétie as a preamble. I had the intuition – or I had read it somewhere before and retained the information – that it would be a good introduction.

New billet: discover the modernity of La Boétie and how relevant his observations are.

"Resolve to serve no more, and you are at once freed. I do not ask that you place hands upon the tyrant to topple him over, but simply that you support him no longer; then you will behold him, like a great Colossus whose pedestal has been pulled away, fall of his own weight and break in pieces" 1/2

This is so funny. Don't believe what AI says or shows about French cuisine. :-) These pictures are ridiculous. And there are spelling mistakes.

Hungarian Lit month at Winston’s Dad – some book recommandations Somehow I missed the announcement that Stu at Winstonsdad is hosting Hungarian Lit Month in February. We're already the 7th of the month, there's not much time to read and write about Hungarian lit before the end of the month, at least for me, considering how little time I have for this blog. I'm in though, I'm currently reading…

Of Ashes and Rivers that Run to the Sea, Marie Munkara My family don’t even bat an eyelid when I arrive back on Bathurst Island and on their doorstep with my belongings

Marie Munkara's fiction is scintillating, I keep hoping for more, so I'm not sure why I took so long to get to this memoir

Theatre : War Does Not Have a Woman’s Face, a stage version of The Unwomanly Face of War by Svetlana Alexievich – what an evening! Last night at the theatre, we saw a stage version of Svetlana Alexievich’s book, The Unwomanly Face of War (1983). Here’s the blurb of the book: This book is a confession, a document and a record of people's memory. More than 200 women speak in it, describing how young girls, who dreamed of becoming brides, became soldiers in 1941. More than 500,000 Soviet women participated on a par with men in the Second World War, the most terrible war of the 20th century.

I haven't read the book.
The actresses were incredible, interacting with each other as if we were just witnessing a conversion.
And of course, with the war in Ukraine, it's even more poignant.
And upsetting.

La guerre n'a pas un visage de femme based on the book by Svetlana Alexievich.
If you can find tickets for it in Paris, go. It's a great play.
