Excited to officially start at US Army Forces Command today. A great opportunity to support and shape the Army as it undergoes changes not seen in 50 years.

There’s been a fair amt of research on this, and in the US at least, we’ve found very little evidence for the “skin-in-the-game” mechanism, though that’s generalizing (meaning there’s always some proportion of ppl whose support of an op does depend on the perceived cost they themselves are paying)

With all due respect to Sam, the lesson is that standing armies, debt financing, and cultural militarism enable a lot of stupid military adventurism. There’s not a lot of evidence that them being professional vs conscript makes much diff, unless the conscripts aren’t allowed to fight abroad.

This analysis on the use of recognizably unconstitutional activity because the Executive Branch (and associated organizations) can get things done faster than the courts can respond hits a lot harder today than when I wrote them 4 year ago... #WWI

I just have to say, as a historian of the Reconstruction-era Klan, that masked paramilitaries are very bad and masked vigilantes are even worse and there are causal links between the two and none of this is good for democracy.
