Time stopped. My heart skipped. My soul left my body. This is what it must feel like when the Virgin Mary appears to you in a vision, or in a pancake. And his eyes -- I was drowning in those dreamy pools of blue. Somehow, I managed to return my spirit to this mortal coil. I squeaked out, “what?”

One day, after lunch, I heard someone rummaging in the back offices. “Don’t mind me, I’m just grabbing something.” I didn’t. I went back to my script. Moments later, footsteps approached. A resounding baritone interjected. “Excuse me.” I looked up…

Once, when I was a very young man, I watched the desk at a small production company for the week between Christmas and New Years; I’m an LA native, so it was no big deal. Plus, getting paid to sit in an empty office and read scripts was A-OK with me.

Knowing that helps buoy me through the ocean of emotions that threaten to drown me on this day. I don’t know if this’ll help you, but it felt fit to share.

Despite a nation’s acrimony, Yamasaki built a symbol of faith in our potential. They were the fruition of a man’s dreams. A fulfillment of a life time of work dedicated to delight and surprise.

Now, every year on this day, I look at this photo I dug up at the Library of Congress. It reminds me that the Twin Towers are not defined just by this one day.

Off that, he was awarded a tremendous commission – The World Trade Center in Manhattan.

Minoru Yamasaki passed away in 1986.

He moved to New York to pursue his career, then sent for his parents when the threat of internment loomed large. In the years to come, he would start his own business. Eventually, he returned to Seattle to design the Pacific Science Center for the 1962 World’s Fair.

At Mossback’s NW, a show where I’m a researcher, we dove into the life of Minoru Yamasaki. Born in Seattle to Japanese immigrants, he believed in the American Dream. He put himself through college, working at Alaskan canneries during the summer.

This day. Many of us will wear today like a burden. An albatross never to be cast off. Some may feel as if they’re sinking under that sadness. Their only consolation that tomorrow hides beyond the horizon. I know that I do – but that heartache has developed a distinct, new dimension.

I vote ice cream.

Truth. Old dogs CAN learn new tricks. It just takes a little extra effort (I say this as an old dog).

My friends have trans kids and, because I'm an "old", I sometimes trip up and use the wrong name / pronoun. I always apologize profusely, and they've always been understanding and gentle with their corrections, because it turns out old dogs can learn new tricks (it just takes a little longer).

Special place in Hell for anyone that make Excel do things it wasn't meant to, then builds something unimaginably complex on that shaky foundation (I once encountered an order-taking, task-tracking database built this way. Company was flabbergasted when it collapsed under its own weight).
