A very animation BG-centric tip.

But I use smart objects a lot in my work. Sometimes it's just easier to paint something flat and warp it into perspective. Also you can pass the materials to another layout artist who might be in that area too.

This is definitely a tough thing to tackle, and I'm glad you're challenging it head on. If a pose feels off but you dont understand what's off with it, my top recc other than looking at reference is to actually try doing the pose yourself. You'll quickly find out if something is off about the -

I'm glad I could help! Looking back at it, something I missed is that the character on the right has a similar issue with balance. He is sitting down with his arm shifting his weight to the side and torso leaning back, but he doesn't have supports to keep him there.
