What was the Italian naval strategy in the Mediterranean during World War Two? Here is explained, with the words of Admiral Giuseppe Fioravanzo

Wholeheartedly recommending @drachinifel.bsky.social's video on the Hungarian River Flottilla, probably the most thorough work in the English language

It's scheduled for tommorow evening, shouldn't have moved from that.

Given they managed to hear ice in experiments in the early 1910's, yes π

There would be the usual planning of sea routes and reports from other ships but in terms of onboard measures the ship could've had hydrophones or similar as early work in underwater acoustics was designed to detect icebergs after the loss of Titanic.

In 1939 incredibly few ships had radar, and what there was, was largely air search, with limited secondary surface search capacity. :)

Jane's is good, just remember it usually goes by launch date, as opposed to commission date. Obviously a certain percentage of a ship will be brass etc but as a starting point basic tonnage is a good rough guide.
10.03.2025 17:39 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
Well, that can be estimated per year by using fleet lists, although it would be complicated by the presence of older partially or fully wooden ships. A tonnage of the main combatants, battleships, cruisers, destroyers etc would be easier to find.

Definitely, I paused it pending the release of a couple of new books, which have then had their release dates pushed back repeatedly!

Without knowing the details the most likely scenario is navigating a congested shipping lane, it puts ships in close proximity and one wrong call can set a near unavoidable collision if not spotted in time. At that point, opening fire wouldn't help much, only making things worse.

Unfortunately I don't know as much about the Great Lakes underwater conditions but given that in the early 19th century they would deliberately sink ships to preserve them, it wouldn't surprise me.

But in the Mediterranean these organisms flourish and will usually rapidly consume organic matter. Only a ship that is quickly and deeply buried would survive, at least in part, but is then much harder to find.

The Baltic is generally very cold and at the seabed level often extremely low in oxygen. The Black Sea is inimical to almost all life in large sections past 50-100ft down. This means the bacteria etc that break down wood and other organics often can't live there

The bronze ram from a Roman warship
Something that's always fascinating in #NavalHistory is how seabed conditions affect preservation. Sink in the Black or Baltic Seas and there's a good chance much of a wreck will be preserved. Sink in the Mediterranean and if you're lucky we'll find the ram and the less perishable cargo.

Happy #TrekTuesday and another #FightingshipsofWolf359, this weeks ship was NOT a part of the battle, but her story is deeply intertwined with the battle, the USS Endeavour, under Captain Amasov Endeavour was at the forefront of the rescue efforts. Written by @drachinifel.bsky.social
