I don't think it's a simple answer. You'd still have holdouts though yeah.

It's explicitly not just the team's fault when you go all the way back to the beginning. Hendrickson took a one-year extension he should not have. But the longer it goes on, the more blame shifts.

It's hard in the NFL sure, but other US leagues have fully guaranteed contracts.

Whether or not the Bengals are really trying to trade Trey, there's clearly an impasse. All of this was avoidable.

Pay him early? You've saved money and avoided embarrassment.

Trade him for picks before the draft? A lesser evil at least.

Drag it out for maximum drama and embarrassment? The worst.

Might be tough to get much of a gauge on the depth WRs when the backup OL is in there. That could get bad fast. A lot of the depth CBs who make the team will also be playing relatively early due to injuries!

They still hypothetically could but their behavior is telling us they're probably not expecting it, or they would have held back more cap space for it

I can't come up with a good reason tbh. The bad reason is to constrict their own cap space on purpose.

tl;dr: inflated y1 cap hits to squeeze 2025 cap space way more than necessary, "preventing" themselves from going after moderate veteran deals that could have helped them push the roster

Lots of cap, enough cash for a few moves within their projected budget. If they extend Trey, tighter for cash unless they're gonna spend more than normal.

Will definitely discuss the cap impact - and cash impact - when we have those numbers! Might be a day or two.

Ossai: Still development available here. Young player on a prove-it deal, and it's nice to see them get a contract done with Mulugheta. Still, I want more for the pass rush. Counting on the guys on the roster to be good starters is risky.

Burks: Eat your veggies signing. Looks like a direct AGD replacement coming off a fantastic playoff run for Philly.

Perine: Another serving of veggies please. Familiar with the Bengals' system, bigger back, good all-round backup player. Limited upside.

Hill: Liked it at the time, now I wonder if they should have leaned pass rush here with benefit of Slaton hindsight.

Slaton: Some good run D numbers via ESPN and best years with Jerry Montgomery. Taking on double teams is a needed skillset that should help LBs, Kris Jenkins, run D overall.

- Waiting for a guard move. Can't wait much longer as the market starts to dry up. Crucial piece of the offseason.
- Waiting for the WR extensions is more than stale at this point.
- A bunch of guys near 30? Will have to see how that plays out.

Summarizing my Day 1 Bengals FA thoughts if that's it for the night:
- All of the moves make sense individually. They're mostly floor-raisers, not game-changers, but you need those.
- Pass rush concerns persist. What's the plan? Trey has to be back on the table.

I like the BJ Hill move for Cincinnati. Solid player, they needed a floor player there with the young guys they're waiting to develop, and Hill is good at that. Fair deal too!
