Hundreds airlifted from storm-battered Western Alaska villages in historic evacuation The Alaska Airlines Center arena at the University of Alaska Anchorage will shelter 300 displaced residents starting Wednesday evening, the American Red Cross said.

It can't be overemphasised how much of a disaster is happening in western AK right now. Kipnuk and Kwigillingok are evacuating, with people only allowed to bring one bag and being forced to leave everything else (including their pets).

I should probably clarify, the bottom left culture was supposed to be a different bacteria type (S. epidermidis) but our bench’s culture of that organism somehow got contaminated with E. coli during the lab and we all ended up with very happy E. coli colonies there instead 😂

When you culture E. Coli on EMB agar medium, it precipitates the salts out of the medium and creates a metallic green colour on the colonies. Pretty freaking cool! (The purple is P. fluorescens)

Had a wonderful weekend with Chris. He came to our family thanksgiving dinner (my girls are with their dad this weekend) and met my siblings.
We watched weird tv and he gave me pointers on Hades 2 (some of which I actually followed successfully!).

Yes, Ellie was correct. My grandfathers are both called Papa and my grandmothers are called Nana. We’re descended from Brits (actually my dad’s parents came over from England on a boat in 1949)

Last night a bunch of stuff/news hit at once. Primarily that my papa is in the hospital due to dehydration. He’s 95 and has advanced dementia so it’s not really a surprise, but it’s still hard.
At 39 I still have 4 living grandparents and I know that’s super unusual and very lucky.
I’m still sad.

So glad you’re ok, and the pilot, too! A close family friend of ours who was a helicopter pilot with decades of experience died in a crash about 10 years ago. It was devastating. So glad this had a happy ending!
