They knew they’d lose in court, didn’t want the embarrassment, and already got what they needed. They extracted concessions from some of the world’s biggest law firms, and nearly every large firm in the country changed how it operates. That said, kudos to the few that actually stood up.
The inherent assumption in the premise is that the legal system remains intact and the law enforceable. This notion seems more ambitious every day.

A government that ignores contracts, punishes those who expect them honored, and threatens to commandeer private property erodes the rule of law. The Anthropic legal 'war' will become one of the most consequential legal battles re private property rights and the rule of law. More at link.
