Yes, especially when we have laws that they should be!
Gender equality work is not just for women, nor it should not only be done with women.
Men should participate in, and a great way to participate is taking advantage of the parental leave.
Education is one of the key reasons why Finland is one of the leading countries in gender equality.
The education system is high quality and accessible.
It still took decades until women reached the top government positions in Finland (and they never have in some countries).
We need to continue the work.
Do you think it’s as easy as having a few women in the parliament to make changes in laws? No.
It takes many women, many years to push the systemic change.
What does having women as part of parliament mean?
Better laws.
From voting to having female parliament members. Finland was a pioneer and 19 women started their work in the parliament in 1907.
When Finland held its first elections, volunteers traveled around the country knocking on doors explaining why everyone should vote.
We had been under Swedish and then under Russian rule, INDEPENDENCE was important, it was important to include women.
How do you feel about living in Finland? Are you proud of Finland’s status as a gender equality trailblazer?
We 🩷🇫🇮 … but still want to keep moving forward and making Finland the first country in the world where there is no gender gap.
Hyvää itsenäisyyspäivää! Glad självständighetsdag!
Happy Independence Day Finland! 🇫🇮
Great day to celebrate all of the great achievements Finland has accomplished for gender equality.
Finland is a world leader, there is only one country ahead of us, Iceland.

1 in 3 women have encounter physical violence or threats by their intimate partner in Finland.
We need more women in leadership positions.
Women’s euro is 84 cents in Finland.
Our parental leave policies are top-notch. But only 15.6% of parental leave is used by men.
We have this societal and political history of equality and Finland is the poster child of women’s rights, so do we still need to even talk about feminism and gender equality? Yes!
Women’s education level in Finland is high; in 2020 there were 16.1% more women with a higher education degree than men.
We got our first female president in 2000, and our first female prime minister in 2003. We got worldwide recognition for our women-run parliament during Covid with 47% of members being women, led by prime minister Sanna Marin.
