The actress Katie McGrath was 23 years old when she left Ireland in 2007, another story in the [illegible] exodus of a [illegible]. Her [illegible] experience, however, was a unique one. She got her break as Morgana, an evil sorceress in the hit BBC series Merlin, and from there she climbed to the peaks of US television (Supergirl) and blockbuster movies (Jurassic World). She inspired action figures and kidsโ€™ costumes, and she was pictured as Morgana on commemorative postage stamps in the UK.
All these years later, she still canโ€™t quite believe it. "Looking at my path and how I got there, it was lightning in a bottle,โ€ she says. โ€œI filmed in Australia and South Africa and Hawaii, Newfoundland, all these crazy places." Fortune and glory overseas came at the expense of her family life in Ashford, Co Wicklow. "I used to get videos and phone calls from home: birthdays, new year celebrations, and everything. I was never there. I loved my job. I loved all it gave me. Iโ€™ve worked in so many amazing countries, but after a while a nice hotel room is just a hotel room. Theyโ€™re all the same. You wonder about the work life balance, what youโ€™re give up, and what youโ€™re getting back. After a while I felt I was missing too much from home."
McGrath, who Iโ€™m speaking to on a Zoom call, holds her laptop over her shoulder so I can see the Wicklow countryside behind her. "I moved back home a year ago,โ€ she explains. โ€œNo matter what I do in another country, I still slot back in. Iโ€™m still a sister, still a daughter."
Wicklowโ€™s prodigal daughter has returned and her latest project is very apt. Brown Bread, which recently premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh, is a charming short film about a woman, played by McGrath, who returns to Ireland from New York to visit her parents (Fionnula Flanagan and Dermot Crowley). It explores the [illegible] between ambition, emigration, and family ties: "A story that a lot of people of our generation will understand and recognize. A good 90 percent of mโ€ฆ

You can tell she's going to be a good feature director because of how sensitive she is. I truly believe you are seeing the start of a very stellar career."
McGrath knows all about stellar careers. She worked on Merlin for five years until 2012. It was the first British drama in over 30 years to be shown on US network television (NBC) and sold to over 180 territories around the world. The actress describes herself as incredibly lucky to have played Morgana, an enchantress from the legend of King Arthur, โ€œI didnโ€™t go to drama school, so I didnโ€™t know what I was doing. I made all of my mistakes on camera for everyone to see.โ€
Yet her naivety proved fortuitous because her growing confidence as an actor was mirrored in her character arc, โ€œBy season four I was like, okay, now I know what I'm doing." She describes the show as her education. It set her up for a decade of roles in fantasy and royalty dramas โ€“ Labyrinth, Dracula, The Queen โ€“ in an era when audiences wanted escapism. In 2016 she hit gold again when she was cast as the villainous Lena Luthor in the American TV series Supergirl: a role that lasted another five years.
Merlin and Supergirl created a vibrant fan community around McGrath. "Theyโ€™re so intelligent, lovely, and kind. I don't have any social media โ€“ Iโ€™m not that kind of person โ€“ but fans were always very respectful and understanding. I count myself very lucky because they cared about me and how I lived my life. When I was doing Supergirl, a lot of girls would come up to me and say, โ€˜I really got into science and STEM because you played a scientist.โ€™ You forget the reach you have and the power you have when youโ€™re on a television in peopleโ€™s homes."
Her fan base was miffed when her Jurassic World (2015), in which her character was mauled and eaten by dinosaurs. But she thinks of the movie, which was one of the top ten highest grossing films of all time, as a career pinnacle. "Iโ€™m very proud of that. When I got my first call sheet, Steven Spielbergโ€™sโ€ฆ

Hey! Sorry to hear that you and your mom were sick, but I'm glad that you are doing better.
My kid is sick too. Got a virus from school and now my wife is also sick. So I'm very tired, but well enough. Just hoping I don't catch it.
Nice hearing from you. I hope uni is doing well. Not long now! ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿคž

Right? It would have been so much better to do 'movies in general' and maybe 'no personal questions.' It would get the point across and make it easier to choose a good question

Yes, I read that and I'm okay with it. I just wish they would allow us to ask about other movies or books she's read. But I'm happy that they're protecting her. Some people can be very creepy, and I wouldn't want them to make her feel uncomfortable ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ
I'm still excited though ๐Ÿ˜
