I've read too many superhero books to let myself support the real life villains of the world.

If that contract with ICE is renewed, I won't support their events, which include Star Wars Celebration, NYCC, Emerald City Comic Con, Book Con, and Magic Con. Let's make sure they let it expire. I've already emailed ReedPop's VP to tell them. I hope you do the same.

I was asked to cover C2E2 this year, and I'm really excited to do so. However, I learned today that the organizer, ReedPop, is owned by a company whose subsidiary, LexisNexis, has a contract with ICE that allows them to more efficiently do harm to people. That contract is set to expire in February.

I read through all of Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum last night. What a wild book. It's such a post-modern superhero story, combining Silver Age fantasy with Bronze Age introspection. I really loved the issue with Billy Batson and Clark doing art therapy.

Imagine a Criterion Collection for comics--a line of international books deemed artistically and/or culturally significant packed with scores of extras. What comic books would need a place in the collection?

Started to see a trailer for a new Tom Cruise movie, then the screen said “From Alejandro G. Iñárritu,” and didn’t need to see any more. I’m sold.

The operant word there would be "meaningful." If it doesn't fit the story, it shouldn't be there. That's true of all elements of writing.

There are characters I love, but more than that, I love what they can do for their respective stories, especially when utilized in ways I wouldn't always agree with. Sometimes I don't like it, and other times I do. But I always want the creators to have the freedom to do it their way.

It's the Last Jedi-fication of comics: a refusal to look at the whole of the fiction because one aspect isn't catered to your specific tastes, and it's baffling because you're missing out on so much of what makes one of the greatest American artforms so beautiful.

I feel bad for the people who read comics solely as a way to consume their favorite character and not as a way to enjoy storytelling. Inevitably, a creator will interpret a character in a way that you don't like, and the latest online craze is to loudly call that person a bad writer.

I spent a significant amount of my day off from teaching creating a presentation on the main reasons I think The Last Jedi is a top-tier Star Wars flick. Will I be sharing it with people? Who's to say?

Posted late last night because I was thinking about this. Just a little short exercise in Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons' mirror technique from Watchmen in the tone of Busiek's Astro City. I love sentimental superhero stories, and I really hope to write a full-length one day.
