That's right. The school had three parts: girls, mixed infants/juniors, and the boys' section towards Blackman Lane. Jacob Kramer Art College was built on the site of the girls' school, lost to fire 1971-ish. The other two buidings closed in 1975. A new middle school was built near Woodhouse Street.

2/2. The point where you took the photo is roughly the spot where Bagby Sq stood: Leicester Pl not visible until Bagby Sq demolished - only the courtyard of the Craven Dairies (Leics Pl/Devon Mt) from attic skylight. Mrs Derek's daughter was called Elizabeth not Ann. Thanks for posting your photos.

1/2. "Islands of almost intact buildings in a sea of rubble when I walked around." Beautifully phrased.

I came home from school one day to find Leicester Terrace had been demolished. Blenheim School ran alongisde the Churchills and Marlboroughs. Leics Terrace to the right of the chip shop.

A Year of Convulsions in New York’s Prisons Jennifer Gonnerman reports on how two murders and a strike exposed a system at its breaking point.

Incarcerated people have long talked about a β€œblue wall of silence” in prisons: an unspoken agreement among correction officers to cover up for one another’s abuses. A report filed after the murder of Robert Brooks exemplifies this phenomenon.

Thinking aloud really, and I'm wondering if it's worth dipping into The Illustrated London News/Illustrated Police News/Police Gazette to see if there are other accounts of the attack or Wm Symonds' retirement? A sketch or artist's impression being better than nothing in the absence of a photo.

Great photos! The chippie on Leicester Pl. was run by Mr Ashton, assisted by Mrs Derek and her daughter Ann - big orders from George Bray's factory nearby. The building at the opposite end (St Mark's Road) was a hairdressers; Holborn Towers in the background. The area was demolished c. 1974.

In 1916, Edvard Munch bought a property known as Ekely in the town of SkΓΈyen, near present-day Oslo. The two-story villa served as his house and studio, becoming for Munch what Giverny was for Monet. This self-portrait was painted while he was visiting Bergen for an exhibition.

Belgium found guilty of crimes against humanity in colonial Congo Court said five women were victims of β€˜systematic kidnapping’ by state over forced removal from mothers as small children

The forced removal of β€œmixed” children from their mothers between 1948 and 1953 in Congo was traumatic and inhumane. These practices found their origin with Belgium’s πŸ‡§πŸ‡ͺ King LΓ©opold. The Belgian colonial state has now been condemned for crimes against humanity..πŸ‘‡πŸΌ www.theguardian.com/world/2024/d...

Welcome to the public domain, GODS’ MAN (1929) by Lynd Ward. πŸ–‹οΈπŸ“– A haunting, wordless story told through woodcuts, this early graphic novel follows an artist’s Faustian bargain.

The BBC used to play the National Anthem at the end of the day's broadcasting. Closedown was usually around midnight in the 1970s - earlier if watching BBC2.

My favorite JEKYLL AND HYDE is Stan Laurel's DR PYCKLE AND MR PRYDE, which features a diabolical Hyde character who terrorizes London with petty pranks, gags and practical jokes. (And, ironically, is probably one of the more faithful versions.)

It is a pity about the delay, although I think Spring 2026 is probably worth the wait, and would perhaps make a nice long wekend for anyone wanting to visit Hull. I quite fancy the Spurn Nature Reserve. A visit to the Spurn Lightship and the Maritime/Transport Museum/Old Town would tie in nicely.

Engineering the Penguin Pool at London Zoo Β· V&A A shelter for penguins, an aquatic sculpture, and an impressive feat of engineering

A 'rubber beach' was a feature of the new Penguin Pool built at the London Zoo in 1934. The examples given in the article mention 'plastic rubber made of cork chippings', reinforced concrete and cement. Could be worth checking RIBA for other examples at home or abroad.
