Years ago, my wife bought a car on Super Bowl Sunday. Not only was it on a Sunday when no one was there. It was still January and very close to the end of the month where the sales people really really wanted to make their monthly goals.

The before shot of me trying to replace the sheathing over the wires of my bike light the pictures of a small circuit board with capacitors, chips and connectors plus 4 neatly soldered 22 gauged wires in red, black, white, and green, neatly attached to their contacts with a dab of solder.

The after shot of me having reconnected those same wires, red, black, white and green. The solder is messy and gloopy and it is quite possible, there is a short somewhere among those wires.

I used to know how to solder. My mentors in college taught me very well, but in the intervening years, something has happened. Even though I watch videos & see folks able to neatly rewire a circuit board with a little bit of flux, solder & an iron in seconds, I guess I need a little more practice.

Mail more letters and postcards. Please.

Adam is becoming one of my favorite journalists to read/hear/watch. I realize most of his Atlantic articles are behind a paywall, like the one I posted on MLK Day, it’s worth your while to go to your local library‘s website to gain access to the Atlantic, it’s well worth the effort. Or subscribe.
