101 Uses of An Abstract Test #43: Contract Testing As distributed systems have become more and more prevalent, I’ve seen how teams spend an increasing amount of time putting out fires caused by dependencies changing.Team A go to bed with a sp…

As our systems get ever more distributed, devs are spending more and more time fighting fires other teams started.

Here's a simple, but powerful, technique for catching integration fires before they spread.

True value in software isn't solely about new features. Protecting current value, reducing costs, and, crucially, avoiding unnecessary costs are equally important. #ValueDriven #CostAvoidance

There does seem to be a correlation between suggestibility and confidence in AI predictions.

"Notably, paranormal beliefs and positive attitudes about AI significantly increased perceived validity, reliability, usefulness, and personalization of AI predictions."

For every Refactoring workshop booking, I get 41 Code Craft and TDD bookings.

IMO, refactoring is the second most important skill for software developers, but evidently the least understood or valued.

I continuously take things back to ground truth: the code as it is now, the tests I specified, the test run results we just got, linter output, mutation testing results etc. I don't let the model tell me it's raining. I go outside and look :-)

Today, looking into instrumenting a big legacy app. I'm super impressed with @augmentcode.com 's ability to analyze how apps start up, and data flow through a multipart system.

Its codebase analysis is top notch.

Oi reckons, when I apply the practices laid out in my blog series, I get results that are just as good - as in, not as bad - when I'm using a 7B parameter model and when I'm using a 700B+ parameter model.

I see small models in my future.

"Growing Object-Oriented Software, Guided by Tests" by Steve Freeman and Nat Pryce. This book does a great job showing how to iteratively "grow" software using automated tests and how "listening" to tests (and using TDD) leads to better design. amzn.to/4f0sAeG

AI will never replace testing.

It will expose how broken your tests really are. If your automation is built on code coverage and not behaviour, you’re building illusions.

What works for building a proverbial barbecue over a weekend might bring the house tumbling down on something much more substantial and long-term.
