The bright background framed the ominous silhouette of the boy. Crystal like spots like a beaded curtain on the window pane were testament to the close call I had with becoming drenched from a water pistol onslaught.

I turned and looked at the wall, the wooden shiplap-like siding stretching to the roof line. There before me was what appeared to be a robot’s head mounted on the wall like a hunter’s moose trophy. Its eyes bulged on little antenna posts; its mouth in between an absurd smile and a moment of surprise.

In that instance I blinked and it all came into focusβ€”my flood lamp and motion sensor had once again got the better of my imagination.

A black & white film image of me reflected in the window of a WWII bomber plane on display in a museum hall. On can also make out the wing and prop of another plane in the background, along with the tail section of a 1940s era fighter plane. I am recognized by the distorted bald patch just above where the camera appears to be, near the bottom right edge of the image.

This is a black & white photo of my Leica M2. I recently bought a used Nikkor 85mm for the Nikon bodies and was testing it on the F2 body. This image is a frame near the beginning from that test roll.

When the roll is finished, I have begun the habit of winding the film such that the tag end remains out of the cassette. I finished shooting the test roll and began winding. I thought I felt the tug of the tag pulling out of the take up spool, so I gave it another half turn and popped open the film door. To my surprise, there was still film spooled and I slammed the door closed as quickly as I could. I started winding once again, not knowing exactly how many frames I’d ruined.

After I developed the film, I found that there were 3 frames completely gone from that silly muck up, plus several that had been slightly exposed to the light. This one, the second frame on the roll, was one that had light leak but ultimately turned out better than what I think it would have without the leak.

Sometimes mistakes can turn out to be better than what was originally planned. Here’s one I made. The story is long, so I put it in the ALT.

Color photo showing the Spiral Jetty land art created by Robert Smithson along the shores of the Great Salt Lake in Utah. It uses basalt rock that was moved from the hill that is directly behind where I am taking this photo.

When originally created, the Jetty was in the water. During the late 90s and early 00s, the water covered the Jetty and people were known to kayak overtop of it. Today, mostly due to significant urban development, the lake is now nearly a mile from the Jetty.

This is an experiment I did based on Bruce Barnbaum’s 2-step developer process he describes in β€œThe Art of Photography.”

All images were shot within seconds of each other, so the difference is the developer.

Control was Xtol diluted to 1:1.

The histogram shows the developed film’s density for the various developer levels.

The 2-step process works like this:
1. Full strength (no dilution) for 1m 30s
2. Agitate first 45s, rest final 45s
3. Pour out full strength & immediately pour in dilution (noted in image)
4. Develop for 8m 30s
5. Agitate first 30s, rest 1 full minute, then agitate at the top of every minute according to the schedule under each image
6. Normal stop + fixer baths at the end

I used a Paterson tank with the twirly stick (no inversions).
