This hurts more than seeing Juan Soto join the Mets.

Okay, not really. But it still sucks.

The Athletic Welcomes New Colleagues | The New York Times Company We’re excited to announce the hiring of several Washington Post journalists as The Athletic expands its coverage of the Commanders, launches a new Nationals beat and adds to its growing roster of…

Delighted that we can platform so many outstanding journalists, and bolster our coverage of D.C. sports, joining @nickijhabvala.bsky.social, @joshrobbins.bsky.social and myself.
Being able to cover D.C. teams more is why I joined @theathletic.com in 2018. Welcome!:

Been meaning to ask

it's genuinely very cool to me to see the world's richest newspaper swoop in immediately after a competitor's mass layoffs to hire some generational talents just because they can.

Eight years ago, The Athletic was the obnoxious villain of the story and the Washington Post was the respected institution that treated its sports reporters so well, not a single one jumped ship.

You normally have to watch WWE to see this sort of extreme change in good guy/bad guy roles.

So that's cool. I'm not gonna make the "you must subscribe" pitch or whatever. But I think D.C. sports fans will find themselves more and more wanting to be subscribers. I think you or anyone should feel free to ask me or anyone questions if you have any

The 51st is expanding D.C. needs more local journalists. You can help us hire them.

A quick 🧡: @51st.news wants to keep growing, and we need your help!

The Post's gutting showed us we can't trust a billionaire to do the right thing. If we want local news to survive, we need to help *build and sustain it*.

Bezos could have saved WaPo’s sports and local journalists. He laid them off instead. β€œThe equation isn’t adding up.”

(Media) SCOOP: Weeks ago, the owner of the Washington City Paper had offered to purchase The Washington Post's sports and local sections, keeping their desks alive.

The Post reporters were laid off and the desks were shut down instead.

Welcome to Nats Journal Your new home for Washington Nationals news, analysis, podcasts and community

β€œWhen the Nats won the World Series in 2019, there were no fewer than seven professional outlets that covered the team on a regular basis. For the last few days, that number has been reduced to one: MLB.com.”

Why the Seahawks’ defense knew it would overwhelm the Patriots: β€˜We have too much for them’ Nick Emmanwori woke up Sunday morning thinking, "Yeah, we got this in the bag." Sunday night, he and his teammates proved him right.

Safety Julian Love clutched a Sierra Nevada pale ale and Nick Emmanwori looked at it, puzzled, before being informed it was a drink for old folks. β€œIt really is,” said Love, who turns 28 next month. β€œIt’s all they had left,” Love joked. The decision that has divided football and could determine the Super Bowl The analytics side is winning the raging debate, but former coach and innovator Mike Martz believes "there's a stupidity to it."

β€œWhen somebody says β€˜analytics’ on TV, I just run to the bathroom to vomit. We’re relying on some numbers? Really? If you aren’t smart enough and prepared enough to make an educated decision on what to do, then you shouldn’t be there.” Mike Martz! www.nytimes.com/athletic/701...

the shuttering of the post's high school sports coverage means no more all-met awards. absolute abdication of the role a local paper should play

I am part of the mass layoffs at the Washington Post.

I am sad and angry. We all want to keep doing the work.

But for now I want to document a reality of being in journalism today.

The sports section basically taught me how to read growing up. Somehow, years later, they let me write in those pages. I’ll cherish that forever.
