What is the quintessential Onion headline? The strong contender that just randomly popped in my mind is "Hank Williams Jr. Honored by Institute For Football Preparedness"

IPSOS do a regular poll of the extent to which the public trust members of various professions. I find it's often a useful reference point.

It's 2025. Anyone who accepts an email sign up without first sending a confirmation email to check the email address is correct needs to be bonked on the head with an amusing squeaky rubber hammer. If it's a gambling site, you can probably drop the word "rubber".

Hilariously not only have you got an incorrect email address, your stupid website doesn't allow me to unsubscribe from your site as I am in Australia.

I guess I'll just set up a Gmail rule to mark all future emails from you as spam in the hope that Gmail will start rejecting all of your emails and you learn to confirm email addresses before you start using them. I'd offer you a nice day, but gambling sites who don't manage the basic steps of email communication don't deserve that. Fix your fucking stuff, parasites.

Every year, keep reducing the Australian defence purchasing budget until they demonstrate an ability to deliver on time at the initial budgetted amount.

Sure this might seem radical, but the current approach of "what if we give them even more money next time" sure as fuck doesn't work

Tip for Jetstar or anyone else. When your IVR has already determined that a caller is likely to be fairly fucking annoyed (like if they're calling about where the fuck their luggage is) perhaps tweak the onhold messages to skip the upselling messages.

Stephen Miller’s ancestors were Jewish refugees from the pogroms in czarist Russia. They came to the U.S. in the early twentieth century, even as racists said this same stuff about them.

Hey y'all, looking for some tips here. I like what I've made so far with Suno but now I'm kind of hitting a wall with ideas for prompts. Why doesn't Suno also have a feature to write prompts for you? Like just hit a button the says "new prompt" and then hit make song when it comes up with something that sounds interesting! Thoughts?

Isaac Chotiner: "You would have to be brain-dead to read this piece and not immediately wonder who is funding Semafor Gulf."

Quote post of Ben Smith saying: "Fascinating @msergie piece on covering a monarchy" about a Semafor article on Saudi Arabia's crown prince

Smith responds to Chotiner: "That's a hell of an allegation/implication, Isaac.

To figure out the literal answer to your question, you'd either have to look and see who the sponsors are in the email (I haven't checked today!) or read our publicly disclosed list of investors. I believe you're trying to imply that it's the Saudi government? Have you read more of our coverage, or just this tweet?

My impression β€” correct me if I'm wrong β€” is that you're working on zero information and smearing us in general, and an experienced journalist
@msergie
whose work I suspect you're totally unfamiliar with in particular."

Chotiner responds:"I’m not making any allegation. I’m making a simple point about how an average readerβ€”myself includedβ€”might respond after reading this ridiculous piece"

Ben Smith: "Just asking questions! Come on. You genuinely know better. Or read Mohammed's long career of work covering the Gulf and the Syrian war before you imply he's some kind of stooge."

Noah Kulwin: "The point is not about who funds your reporting/if your colleague is a β€œstooge”. Isaac’s comment is that the reporting is so bad so as to make a reader wonder who is funding it"

Smith: A reader, sure. A journalist who can do very basic homework, kind of lame.

Chotiner: "You are right, I’ll do some homework now by perusing Jay Solomon Semafor pieces, and reading Jason Greenblatt Semafor columns. In the meantime, I will formally say that I am making no accusation and was just astonished at how inane the piece was"

Screenshot says "Held at Abu Dhabi Finance Week, Semafor will spotlight insights from the Global Findex 2025 report and the Global Digital Connectivity Tracker, translating global research into actionable, locally relevant conversations.

As the third stop on The Next 3 Billion Tour, this edition explores how the Gulf's growing investments in Africa can accelerate digital connectivity and financial inclusion. With Abu Dhabi's focus on sustainable finance, digital transformation, and cross-border collaboration, it offers a strong platform to examine how technology and capital can work together to expand access and opportunity."

The thing about Carville's piece is that it's a perfect example of the way centrists can't write literally anything without getting in a few jabs at the left/minorities. It's entirely possible to run on "economic rage," sure. There's no need to go, "And remember what some people on Tumblr said??"
