From Cultural Plan to cultural practice: why the Citizens for Culture handover matters Yesterday at Watershed, I had the privilege of witnessing a milestone for culture and democracy in the West of England: the formal handover of the Citizens for Culture Cultural Plan to the region’s…

Citizens for Culture Cultural Plan handed over to WECA at Watershed yesterday. The value will only land if recommendations translate into visible decisions and delivery with accountability baked into existing governance.

Over 80% of adolescents who die by suicide live in LMICs, like Rwanda.

Intergenerational trauma, conflict & other complex challenges contribute to high rates of youth self-harm in the country. A new study led by Dr Faith Martin reveals more: https://bit.ly/3Nbhf2O

Re: running groups for people living with long term conditions. Most groups are *group education* (‘expert’ leads group) and full of content. In contrast *group activation* relies on facilitation and learning from each other with little formal content. See Irvine Yalom’s common factors.

Absolutely! It’s been incredible working on projects with different parents over the years, hearing again and again that shame, blame - and how services/systems sometimes deepen that.

Very keen to connect with others - reposts, signposts, info etc all gratefully received!

It strikes me that a framework for parent support is needed, that pulls out commonalities for parents across the different children’s needs, whilst seeking to acknowledge the differences and important features of different circumstances. Not sure how to take this forward and keen to gain input

Thanks Charlie! I’ve been involved in various projects over the years for “interventions” for parents of kids with various needs, and noticed that pattern of isolation, huge co-ordination demands, numerous practical challenges, then also those internal psych processes of self-blame, worry etc.

Why does improving parental wellbeing matter, for parents of children with additional needs eg mental health problems, acute & chronic health difficulties, & challenges re neurodivergence?

Are we doing enough to support parents?

What good practice and needs?

We are a long way indeed from systematically collecting and acting on the voices of patients. Abolishing Healthwatch and handing responsibility for its work to ICBs (which are themselves undergoing massive reorganisation) is in my own view a very bad move indeed by DHSC.

Culturally and structurally embedded pathways to youth self-harm in Rwanda: perspectives from young people, parents, and healthcare providers - BMC Psychology Background Self-harm (with and without fatal intent) among young people in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remain under-researched despite disproportionately high rates. Little is known about...

Youth self-harm in Rwanda isn’t just an individual struggle, it’s shaped by culture, family dynamics, poverty & community responses.

We need structural, culturally-grounded prevention and support.

The four-fold drain of scientific publishing: Money, Time, Trust, and Control.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk 🎤

We’re asking research funders & universities to step up because together, they have the leverage - and frankly, the responsibility - to stop the drain and redirect billions currently flowing to commercial publishers 💸 back into community-owned systems that serve science, not profit.

Can you imagine what else we could do with that money?
Fund researchers, students, labs, infrastructure… which all sounds better to me than enriching a publishing oligopoly. 3/n

Why? 🤑
In just the last 5 years, 4 publishers made $US 41 billion in revenue and $14.7B in profit - money that largely comes from taxpayer-funded research budgets.

For context: the entire 2024 NSF budget was $9B USD.
@elsevierconnect.bsky.social made $3.9B that year at a 38% profit margin. 2/n

Transparent and comprehensive statistical reporting is critical for ensuring the credibility, reproducibility, and interpretability of psychological research. This paper offers a structured set of guidelines for reporting statistical analyses in quantitative psychology, emphasizing clarity at both the planning and results stages. Drawing on established recommendations and emerging best practices, we outline key decisions related to hypothesis formulation, sample size justification, preregistration, outlier and missing data handling, statistical model specification, and the interpretation of inferential outcomes. We address considerations across frequentist and Bayesian frameworks and fixed as well as sequential research designs, including guidance on effect size reporting, equivalence testing, and the appropriate treatment of null results. To facilitate implementation of these recommendations, we provide the Transparent Statistical Reporting in Psychology (TSRP) Checklist that researchers can use to systematically evaluate and improve their statistical reporting practices (https://osf.io/t2zpq/). In addition, we provide a curated list of freely available tools, packages, and functions that researchers can use to implement transparent reporting practices in their own analyses to bridge the gap between theory and practice. To illustrate the practical application of these principles, we provide a side-by-side comparison of insufficient versus best-practice reporting using a hypothetical cognitive psychology study. By adopting transparent reporting standards, researchers can improve the robustness of individual studies and facilitate cumulative scientific progress through more reliable meta-analyses and research syntheses.

Our paper on improving statistical reporting in psychology is now online 🎉

As a part of this paper, we also created the Transparent Statistical Reporting in Psychology checklist, which researchers can use to improve their statistical reporting practices

This is not a research project itself, rather an attempt to make connections with other researchers or practitioners, to start talking ideas. We are looking for funding to do discussions directly with parents - so look out for future news!

Is there a way we can develop a framework for services to improve how they think about the parents' wellbeing, within services for the child and family? Perhaps there are ones with parents of children with some needs, but not others. Or, have we missed it, and it already exists?

DLD is a lifelong condition and it does make lots of things more challenging. BUT once a person's needs are identified and they are supported they can thrive.
This is why we need far more awareness of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)! www.naplic.org.uk/developmenta...
