Putting up owl boxes is brilliant β and weβre doing lots of that β but boxes alone arenβt enough. An owl box without good habitat is a bit like a house without a fridgeβ¦ thereβs nothing to eat! Rough grass, field margins and fewer poisons make all the difference π¦πΎ @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social

SOSSwifts have βinheritedβ the RH pile of buff and red coloured #Swift boxes, they have a 20mm stand off at the back for a bonus bat space too. We will happily donate these to #Suffolk locations where Swifts nest already, or next door. @suffolkwildlife.bsky.social @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social

Governmentβs wildlife targets will be missed in England, watchdog says
Seven out of 10 targets have little likelihood of being met by 2030, Office for Environmental Protection says
Hugely depressing read, but no surprise, considering the destruction Sizewell C is allowed to inflict on a supposedly protected landscape

This roof hosts Starlings in spring, Swifts in summer & House Sparrows year round. The RHS house has just been re-roofed to modern standards & anti-bird combing can be seen under the new tiles. Valuable nest space lost, so nest boxes added. @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social @suffolkwildlife.bsky.social

Fantastic to have the 2024 Suffolk Bird Report land in the door mat. Swifts obviously checked first. 379 nest boxes were used in 2024, up from 272 in 2023 and 231 in 2022. We are chasing up data for 2025, please do let us know your records. @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social @suffolkwildlife.bsky.social

Interesting. On a recent @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social field trip to north Norfolk we saw a Noctule attack a Red Kite. It was around mid day. A fascinating observation.

Curlew and Shelducks on banks of Orfordness with the old military buildings in the background taken from a boat on the River Ore
Redshank feeding on the bank of Butley River taken from a boat
Enjoyed a very pleasant @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social boat trip on the River Ore and Butley River on Sunday, was interesting to observe a good number of waders from the boat. Also before the trip I managed to see the North Warren shrike which was showing very well #Suffolkbirding

Four mornings in a row at @landguardbo.bsky.social, with daily views of the wonderful Pallasβs Warbler, but the highlight turned out to be a butterfly! In the sunshine I found three Common Blues (two males), Suffolkβs latest ever by two days. Good to watch one with @landguardbirder.bsky.social.

Friday 7th November 2025
Pallas's decided to pull the old disapearing act this afternoon.
A plethora of autumnal migrants passing through on this fine November morning. A Merlin spent a short while sitting on the beach before heading to Essex. The first Woodcock this year flushed from inside the observatory - considerably late this autumn. A steady stream of new Blackbirds appearing throughout the day alongside 12 Redwing, 15 Song Thrush and 3 Fieldfare. Other migrants 5 Blackcap, 1 Brambling, 14 Chaffinch, 2 Chiffchaff, 12 Goldcrest, 51 Goldfinch, 29 Meadow Pipit, 1 Redpoll, 15 Robin, 2 Rock Pipit, 30 Siskin, 28 Skylark, 92 Starling and 1 Woodlark.Β
Pomarine Skua heading North the clear winner of today's sea watch. Plenty more on the big blue including 825 Brent Goose, 16 Common Gull, 126 Cormorant, 2 Curlew, 15 Dunlin, 1 Gannet, 10 Golden Plover, 2 Grey Plover, 4 Knot, 73 Pintail, 95 Lapwing, 3 Red-breasted Merganser, 2 Red-throated Diver, 68 Shelduck, 26 Shoveler, 201 Teal, 134 Wigeon.Β
Gem is an immigrant that usually arrives very late in the season. As a sexually dimorphic moth one can tell this is a female by the maroon-brown colour and white spot on each wing. Males are lighter tawny-brown.
Ringing: 37 Blackbird, 3 Blackcap, 1 Black Redstart, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 6 Chaffinch, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Firecrest, 5 Goldcrest, 8 Long-tailed Tit, 3 Meadow Pipit, 2 Redwing, 6 Robin, 1 Song Thrush, 1 Wren.
