When governments make the right decision, like halting the Cumbria coal mine, ISDS (aka 'corporate courts') give corporations the power to challenge them in highly secretive tribunals. If those corporations win, they pass their losses from projects onto the taxpayer.

This has to be a wake up call. The UK must finally remove this deeply undemocratic system from all its trade and investment deals to undo this straitjacket on climate action and end the secretive courts only available to corporations and their lawyers.

For years, weβve been calling on the UK government to scrap the mechanism in its trade deals that allows fossil fuel companies to sue governments over necessary climate action - with taxpayers footing the bill.

The mining company behind the quashed Cumbria coal mine is using a trade treaty to sue the UK government.
The High Court had quashed the coal mine due to the assumptions that the mine would not increase global greenhouse emissions being βlegally flawedβ

For many years we've been calling for the ISDS mechanism in trade and investment treaties to be dropped as they allow corporations to sue governments for things like action on climate change. Now it's happened to the UK government for stopping a climate wrecking coal mine ‡οΈ
Time to end ISDS!

We find the defence sector driving demand across the board, and the minerals requiring the most significant increases in production are needed for EVs.
06.08.2025 09:54 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Talk around the 'green transition' often touts the need for huge increases in mineral mining.
But our findings show that small diversions of minerals from other uses would facilitate the βͺInternational Energy Agency's renewable energy goals without the need for increasing production.
π¨ NEW: Over half of minerals designated as βcriticalβ by the UK play βno major roleβ in the green transition, our research reveals
Our new briefing finds the often-harmful mining of these resources is being driven in a large way by militarisation

Our message to governments everywhere: Stand up to Trump.
01.08.2025 13:07 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Unless governments stand together, they will continue to see their sovereignty stripped from them. Unless they start to build an economy which puts the protection of ordinary people and our planet at its core, they will be doomed to paying the Emperor in the White House ever higher tribute.
01.08.2025 13:07 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Trump is trying to create a world order in which corporate America rules supreme, unobstructed by the sovereignty of any other government. Such a profoundly undemocratic economy is not in the interests of American workers, any more than it is in the interests of the vast majority of humanity.
01.08.2025 13:05 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Today, Trump has launched more economic missiles at countries across the world. His message is simple: submit to the demands of his friends in the oligarchy, or you will be wiped out.

NEW: Reaching net-zero will be much cheaper than previously thought, and the cost of climate breakdown far more severe, according to the OBR.
The amount of investment needed to reach net zero will be just over half as much as previously thought: obr.uk/frs/fiscal-r...
Trumpβs trade negotiations style might be highly erratic, but his is a clear-cut end goal: To upend the world economic system, replacing rules which were already unfair with the absolute dominance of the biggest bully.
31.07.2025 08:38 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Trump's tariff and trade deal strategy is clear: bully governments to change their rules and regulations in favour of US corporate interests, especially those of oligarchs who surround him.

We demand that the UK government takes more action now:
β‘οΈ A ban on trading with Israelβs illegal settlements
β‘οΈ Suspending the UK's trade agreement with Israel - and no further negotiations
β‘οΈ Sanctions on firms involved in the occupation or the attacks on Gaza

Palestinian statehood is the right of Palestinians β not a bargaining chip. Starmer needs to recognise this isnβt a war between equal parties, but an occupation and a genocide. 3/4
30.07.2025 13:05 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0The UK has real leverage, which could change things quickly: it should impose comprehensive economic sanctions and ban arms sales. Both would be popular, effective and necessary. But the government continues to avoid these options. 2/4

The UK has just signed a trade agreement with India. If our government wants trade to benefit society and ordinary citizens, rather than big business and its profits, then this isn't the way to go.
