There's a subgenre of medieval lit that features god turning women into men. The result is incredible passages like this from the 14th century: "Jesus, who made the world, now asks you which you prefer β speak honestly: to remain a woman, as he created you, or to become a man? The choice is yours".
whenever i encounter people who say they can't understand shakespeare verses I always send them this clip from the 2019 Shakespeare in the Park production of Much Ado About Nothing
Ever since Robert Evans was made Water Czar of my city, I've had no issue staying hydrated. I just can't get enough of drinking water. I've never been so moist. Its great!

The 2nd draft of "Children of Wilds and Walls" is shaping up well. Im expanding it some. Going to keep it tight, just need a couple scenes more.

I'm in my normal horse era.
I would like to stop living through history now. Can I live in the past when everything eas great? No, not that time. No, not that time either. No, a different time. No, I dont mean that time. No, I mean the good time. No, not that one. No, that's not it. No, another time...
I finished the reread of "Children of Wilds and Walls". Its an uncut gem. A really clean first draft ready to be worked into something great. The word count may increase to bolster the themes, but it reads pretty brisk already.

AND THE FIRST DRAFT IS DONE! 960 words written yesterday while at the club. 1,360 words written tonight with a glass of mead and black candles. 10,426 words total!
With that done, I'm not sure what to do with the rest of my night. Write some more, I guess.

I am 2-4k words away from finishing my current story. Crossing that line is my goal for the weekend.
After that, I think it'll be time to start editing and revising my backlog of drafts. And after that, typesetting, printing, and selling in the park!

What's up with substack?
I wish I had more time to write, and a better brain for making the most of the time I have. The ideas come faster than the words. The future comes head on before I can be ready. Its all too much and too fast. I can feel my characters starving and I don't feel up to the task. Stop the world! Mercy!
When I was little, the U.S. military came to our home at gunpoint and took me and my family away. We were imprisoned for years in barbed wire camps simply because we were Japanese American. I have spent my life telling that story, hoping it would never be repeated.
Other than that, and some mixed feelings about the bit with the unicorn, I mostly enjoyed Lords and Ladies. 7/10.
I would recommend it, even tho for my own reasons I feel troubled and let down by the end. I expect I'll feel about it in time, similar to how I feel about Andor.
If there is one thing we don't need more of in the world, its cruelty justified by claims of necessity and pragmatism.
These characters are often very good characters. They have depths and nuance and can be thrilling to watch work. There is a reason you get these characters. Yes, good isnt the same as nice. But cruelty isn't a prerequisite for wisdom, intelligence, or effectiveness. It is a choice.
They can be right and essential to the victory. But stop telling us that cruelty is necessary, that manipulation and abuse is necessary, that the smart/wise must be controlling and unquestioned. Dont make it so miserable to be good.
Its miserable.
What pushback there is, is proven wrong or at best, gets them to lighten up on the surface level only.
The thing is, I never ask for them to not be who they are. All I want is for their callousness to be a flaw, to see them get cut down on it the way they cut others.
The suffering is mandatory. You need them, you're dumber than them, not as wise as them, therefore when they manipulate you and put you down, you just take it. If you push back, you're wrong. They know better. If you resist or fight back, you're in the wrong.
The trouble is that talk around this trope gets bogged down in defences, dodges, and diversions that cover up the issue. Because "they were right" and "good doesn't mean nice" and other such.
Im thinking through this myself, but I think my first argument is this makes good, and life, miserable.
Im learning that one of my biggest pet peeves in stories is "the asshole who is right, therefore justified in everything". For the second time in recent time, this trope has spoiled the ending of a story I otherwise might have loved.

Would you expand on what you mean by craftsmanship in this regard?
"We must protect women from the big strong brains of anyone assigned male at birth" is a pretty revealing take from the gender essentialist transphobic pieces of shit.
Last day of Pride month, remember that tomorrow we switch back to Wrath.
Pride cometh before the fall, but it's not specified who's fall it is. It won't be ours.

This article is both really good, and has catalyzed in me a greater pride in my own writing and a style that is all my own. Grammar is a guideline. Word choice is a thousand branching roads to ten thousand unseen lands. Rhythm is a dance on the page.
Darkness stalking from behind
Thorns and brambles so unkind
The coldest breath upon my neck,
Whisper "All things die, dont forget."
Through crooked branch I strain to see,
The silver light, moon shine on me
With my eyes in shadows deep
I flee the dread last-winter sleep
