I think another part of it (along with The Strokes) is that now, does it make any difference these bands were popular? Maybe that the future didn’t want to be them, because there’s little vestige of it present today, but directly, there’s a massive gulf between music today and their popularity then

Killer if he’d made it a proper album, but something I guess he felt he couldn’t risk the time spent doing

I guess for me looking back now - in which hindsight is valuable for sure - when you have roads that go elsewhere for pop/rock (incorporating electronica for one), they opted to turn inward for those who didn’t want to go elsewhere, which feels very cynical now

I see them more as refried and rehashed rather than influenced by. I get how maybe in 2001 it was thrilling to see these guys in black leather sounding like this. In 2026, it seems silly

I remember when this came out and all the hullabaloo around it. I liked it ok at the time, I actually got their 3rd album but eventually got rid of it.

Like The Strokes, I’ve come to view this as a calculated derivative of some perceived β€œgolden age” of rock that feels hollow now.

Non English songs are way outside my purview still but, I reviewed this once upon a time and it was great

I assume it’s some early, half-room sized computer that used punch cards to operate it

That guy clearly is listening to either Wilco, The National, or REM

I guess maybe find what tracks from it are on a live album and listen then listen back at the album again?

I find their studio albums overproduced

Listen to them live only is my one MMJ advice (not unlike the Grateful Dead)

They’re my brother in law’s favorite band and I saw them with him at a festival and they were great live but I never got anywhere listening to the same songs on their studio albums (life album Okanokos is great)

I agree JA if just because of the alt/indie crossover. Top 20 I don’t know about top 10, depends how folks feel about it now vs other things that are less heavy and presumably more palatable at their advanced ages
