It's impossible to overestimate how damaging this would be for everything from routine weather forecasting, to modeling and tracking hurricanes, to preparing for climate change.
Every American will be worse off if this happens. For decades to come.

A sobering — and critical — 4 minutes from my colleagues in Pennsylvania about the hollowing out of the National Weather Service and its parent organization, NOAA.
Massive thanks to Marissa Ferger and @roblydick.bsky.social.
"...the NWS costs each American about a penny a day."
Such a pretty morning here in SE Michigan
The day started off with snow blowing the driveway and then turned into making some amazing Valentines sugar cookies with the kids.
Not bad for a snow day
January 2025 was very dry across most of the U.S. According to Prism data, it was the driest January since 1985 and the 5th driest since 1895.
Just a phenomenally pretty morning in the arctic of Detroit 🥶
Holy moly it is snowing hard! Went to get the kiddos at the bus stop and our driveway and street were covered within 10 minutes. You know I am no fan of cold weather, but it was beautiful! Also, because it wasn’t frigid either😆
Winter wonderland! Cold but beautiful to look at #Detroit
WOW!
⚠️❄️FIRST EVER BLIZZARD WARNING issued from Beaumont, TX to Lake Charles & Lafayette, LA!! Heavy snowfall rates & gusty winds dropping visibility to near 0, causing blizzard conditions on the Gulf Coast!
Historic snow stretches from NOLA, Tallahassee & Charleston today! @cnn.com
We had a few visitors this morning
Just WOW!
It’s not every day that you see a blizzard warning for Southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas
Love it!!
Not a ton of snow by any means but definitely a snowy day! #Detroit
So yesterday, I mentioned that something reminded me of bozo the clown.
My oldest kid wanted to know who that was so I showed her some YouTube clips. She goes OK that’s just weird. Why would you watch him?
She’s kind of right. I never realized how creepy he was 😆
Nice snow band moving through!
Freezing temperatures in Phoenix are becoming incredibly rare.
Our expanding urban heat island and changing climate is leading to warmer overnight lows.
Our coldest nights are not quite as cold as they used to be.
We haven't hit the freezing point at Sky Harbor since 2019.
That is amazing
The data is in. 2024 was the warmest year on record, and probably in the whole of human history – about 1.6°C warmer than the pre-industrial period.
More than 1 billion individual thermometer measurements, made by thousands of people over many decades, have been condensed into a single number.
This gif tells the story.

Another lovely sunrise over Point Place, Ohio... not nearly as much sunlight to go around by the time that snow gets here this afternoon!
