Your story highlights the possibilities when players are willing to dive into unfamiliar environments (with a bunch of TOs and standards/practices they’re unfamiliar with), and also when orgs are willing to give aspiring TOs a shot at joining an org and growing alongside it

Established tournament orgs like UP allowed me to network with other TOs around the scene while also building my skills and reputation, so I would recommend joining one if you are able to if you're interested in contributing to the tournament scene!

Been working on the splatoon peer review server for this reason. It's getting a lot of players together who want to learn this game on a deeper level than "more paint lol," where the reward is worth the effort

"how do you impart knowledge when people arent receptive" you forget about them and build a community of growth mindset-oriented people

I've spent years on some coachees who pretend to listen, and have had to learn there are just as many players who are sponges to new concepts

Agreed, yeah. There’s an in-between from pickups and teams that’s valuable.

While solo play can help, there’s still a problem when teammates scapegoat a weapon after not using the openings that it creates/setting it up. Tormi has been harrassed for their weapon pool and they’re not alone

When combined with tunnel visioning on results rather than learning, it leads to staying with the same ‘comp style’ as the lowest risk way to maintain social capital.

8s dont rectify this because a lot of midlevel still expects an ‘aggro’ to mimic stamper/bucket, the ‘backline’ to mimic pen, etc

In midlevel there is a common mindset of refusing to adapt to teammate strengths + scapegoating the comp on losses. It makes it much harder to run unconventional weapons and styles in pickups, when players expect an inkbrush to play like splash, or their tetra to never push w/o cooler

Could always repurpose part of the nbfuss or 11’8” servers for this. Lots of people are already there and may have lfg roles etc, and if it becomes less active then at least it’s not another server in your list

Would you want to see DE tournaments normalize underground brackets for teams that go 0-2 or 1-2? Would that help your concerns?

This is it. When I get to chat with other game makers it feels like we’re explorers and investigators getting together to swap tips and stories and find out how our last expeditions into the wilds of design went. Sharing this knowledge enriches and encourages each other.

I really like Noctis’s emphasis that it’s on both sides. Both top level staying in their own circles, and also the mindset outside of + focusing on ‘results’ rather than improvement and the process. Growth mindset and building each other up is how we grow stronger.

What are your thoughts on formats like SoS? They try to build a balance between “you get curb-stomped by good teams at the start, but then you have some closer games and a more approachable bracket”

Seeing a lot of replies about content but I don’t think it stops there. If we normalize a culture of asking questions, giving/receiving advice, and acknowledging you don’t know everything, it could help many players understand how to approach competitive roadblocks
