i carry a skeleton with me everywhere i go

this may sound harsh, but personally i don’t like discussing my writing/process with complete strangers! i have a friend of 10+ years who also writes fanfic so i’ll discuss things with him if i’m looking to bounce ideas around. i also discuss my process with my partner… and that’s it. 💁

but thing is, fanfic writers probably aren’t gonna just put these things in notes or anywhere else for random readers to see. so unless they state openly that they want feedback don’t assume they do. they are probably having this convos with like, you know, a *friend*, not a random reader.

most of the time it’s easy to spot when someone needs help cuz they’ll just tell you! complaints like “i’m struggling to capture xyz”, “i want this scene to be serious but it just comes across funny” or “i don’t know how to pace this chapter” are pretty obvious - it really comes down to listening.

but this goes beyond fanwork imo, it’s about caring to figure out what the other person wants/needs. it’s a difference between ‘here’s feedback i know you’ll appreciate’ vs ‘here’s feedback i personally think you need’.

that’s what i’ve been trying to tell people! don’t assume fic writers are open to concrit, a lot of us don’t write to become masters of the quill lmao, we’re just having fun and if theres one thing that really spoils fun is unsolicited advice.

at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter if your advice is good or if the writing is bad. people are doing it for fun. the pressure to be good should be kept away from hobbies unless the person who’s doing it specifically wants it.

nobody in fandom thinks it’s normal to go up to someone who’s drawing for fun and say “your drawing fucking sucks, here’s what you should have done” but somehow fic writers are supposed to be thankful for all the unnecessary shit they get

thing is, i know these ppl *know* what they are calling out ISNT what they say it is cause if they believed it was, they wouldn’t risk doing time for possession. they are just pearl-clutching bullies.

if you genuinely believe you saw CSAM online, do you:

a) disengage with the content and alert appropriate authorities or,

b) save the pictures to *your device* and reupload them as a google doc, in a redacted manner, then spread it all over the place via a callout?
