Congratulations on 35 years of science, service and shrewdness!
29.01.2026 19:07 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0My Swiss-born wife has insisted we do this regularly for years and it has always seemed entirely sensible (and nicely bracing in winter) but I didn't realise it was called house-burping.
27.01.2026 11:43 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0To reiterate: (The fact that he had a gun he never drew is immaterial; the videos show that they attacked him before they knew it; they murdered him after they confiscated it.)

25.01.2026 13:59 β π 231 π 37 π¬ 9 π 5Great to see climate attribution studies featuring as one of the 21 best ideas of the 21st century in today's @newscientist.com . Net zero is another of the best ideas. With me on my Italian summer holidays and Dave Frame and Myles Allen running a climate model on the train to @metoffice.gov.uk
23.01.2026 19:10 β π 11 π 5 π¬ 0 π 0It's all a bit noisy having your brain and then your heart scanned but it's good to be part of this. My dad had dementia (which I attribute to heading too many leather footballers as a young man) and it's good to feel that my brain might help cure such a horrible disease in future.
20.01.2026 19:12 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Taking train to Bristol to spend 4 hours being scanned (again) as part of the Biobank project. Feels good to be doing something positive by adding some extra data points to this extraordinary project that is improving healthcare. 20.01.2026 14:06 β π 3 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Professional portrait of atmospheric scientist Susan Solomon. She has short, tousled gray hair, wears large round dark-framed glasses, and is smiling gently. She is dressed in a textured navy-blue blazer over a black top, with a bright multicolored floral/paisley scarf tied at the neck. Her arms are crossed confidently in front of her chest. She wears a silver watch on her left wrist. The background shows a softly blurred indoor space with warm architectural tones.
Atmospheric chemist Susan Solomon was born #OTD in 1956.
Solomon, working with colleagues at NOAA, proposed/confirmed the cause of the Antarctic ozone hole, chlorofluorocarbons. She led the Nat'l Ozone Expedition to Antarctica to collect evidence & was the only woman on the team. #WomenInSTEM (1/2)

Ben Santer, an outstanding scientist and historically significant figure in the development of understanding of climate change, is relocating to the UK. Very much looking forward to him visiting the @metoffice.gov.uk to talk about our common research interests.

10.01.2026 16:41 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The detailed account on the BBC website censors this bit and states "The ICE agent swears". Why that editorial decision? www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

08.01.2026 21:59 β π 48 π 27 π¬ 0 π 0How grotesque the mixture of ambivalence and retreat into useful lies has been to see from news shows , bigots , bots and right wing politicians talking about Renee Nicole Good
08.01.2026 17:43 β π 333 π 50 π¬ 7 π 5Excellent, damning analysis of the video of the killing of Ms Good, from the NYT, including a quick debunking of the βevidenceβ the President showed other Times reporters last night.

The US has some of the worldβs best climate scientists (and more of them than anywhere else) & has contributed disproportionately to understanding the climate system. Itβs idiotic for the US to withdraw from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change & the IPCC but itβs on brand for this regime.

07.01.2026 11:58 β π 17 π 4 π¬ 0 π 0Really enjoying reading the biography of Crick by @matthewcobb.bsky.social. Got me thinking about archives and collecting an archive of the International Detection and Attribution Group (see my book Hot Air). Here are four key members - Wehner, Allen, Hegerl, Tett at an IDAG meeting in the 1990s.

31.12.2025 12:26 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Now fixed. I was able to download the pass this morning and import my ticket into my wallet. This was either because a) the nice chap on the LFC chat (not a bot!) did contact the IT guys who fixed it b) the system (which system?) re-sets over night c) everything's better after a good night's sleep.
31.12.2025 09:16 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I'm an age when a former time seemed much easier. In the 80s I went to Anfield with my dad with paper tickets bought by post. Today I bought a ticket for FA Cup vs Barnsley but got into a tangle with my NFC pass on my phone that remains unresolved with help desk so as it stands can't use my ticket π
30.12.2025 17:47 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Some reflections after returning back from a conference at which I and 20,000 colleagues learned that the Trump administration intends to dismantle #NCAR. This outrage should not happen. deepconvection.substack.com/p/save-ncar
21.12.2025 19:25 β π 121 π 49 π¬ 1 π 2The more I think about it, the more I incline to the opinion that the most important thing of all is not to lose hope and faith in life itself. Anyone who does so is lost, regardless of what good fortune may befall him. And so, from the bottom of my heart, my New Year's wish is that you not lose your hope, faith and ability to delight in the world-even if the world is the way it is. If you can manage that, everything else will come; if you give in, nothing can help you. VΓ‘clav Havel Letter to his wife, Olga 21st December 1980

22.12.2025 12:38 β π 89 π 21 π¬ 0 π 0Read this from Ben Santer (very famous climate scientist for those who donβt know) about what NCAR means and what dismantling it will do.
20.12.2025 16:03 β π 114 π 61 π¬ 5 π 1I know many of you who follow me don't work in climate science, but this is the biggest story in climate right now. Breaking up NCAR makes us all less safe and is another act of self-harm that will take decades to recover from.
