When we consider Bach's music, we think of his monumental sacred works—the Passions & the Mass in B Minor. Yet he was equally at home writing music on a more intimate scale, & this program highlights that side of his work.

The Lisette Project Sun, Feb 22
What kind of song is this?
Through a European lens, Lisette comes from a popular song tradition in 18th-century France called the air de salon. It's also a contrafactum, or song parody, meaning it borrows a tune that already existed.

The Lisette Project Feb 22
"Lisette quitté la plaine," the earliest surviving song in Haitian Creole is attributed to colonist Duvivier de la Mahautière, the melody had earlier circulated in Paris & recalls love songs written by Coccotes (Black courtesans)-bridging colonial & Haitian traditions.
