Who should decide what makes a building beautiful? Everyone agrees that we need more homes, and fast — and that we want them to look good. But who should be the judge: architects, governments or the general public?

I offered a dissenting voice in this article about "beauty" in #architecture, though little of it got in. Essentially, I can't see why style wars should wang on self-promotingly through a climate emergency.

No details on the actual issues but much of this sounds like unqualified installers and a lack of QA from the government made for a toxic mix.

Gypsum production in Germany is set to plummet (first because it won’t be available as a byproduct of coal burning, later because mining will be phased out), so they are investigating clay boards as an alternative...

not really, by human scales. atm clay is mostly used from digging here and there anyway.

The UK is seriously clay-rich btw.

Not so fun fact, we tested clay boards on timber ceilings >10 years ago, they basically worked fine but the mounting was $%&$! and the test failed. Money was gone, because funding schemes are about something else every 5 minutes.
Then we had business as usual gypsum on everything for >10 years.

You can absolutely share and like this even if you live in or work with standard building materials.
Because most of these will not be available for reno's and new builds if we care about stuff like emissions and species extinction.
It's cool that we already have alternatives to most stuff.

Fun fact: you can produce 6 straw drywall boards with the primary energy that it takes to produce 1 gypsum fiber board. For a normal gypsum board, 4 straw boards.
