A whole generation grew up watching TNG was trained to assume moral superiority, rather than accepting that they might assume moral superiority in the face of crisis and lack of information.

And, IMHO, these ideas are consistent across both series.

My basic point is this:

TOS gave us a humanity striving to be better. To learn, to grow. TNG gave us a perfect humanity. The speech by the Metatron at the end of this episode TO Kirk would have been given BY Picard.

Thought I'd watch it. A little "comfort food" after the stress of the last week, but I suddenly felt a wave of melancholy.

Sorta tired of the "there are only 3 Indiana Jones movies" thing.

There are four.

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, much like the original STAR WARS, is a populist work of art that stands alone. Everything past that? Remarkably consistent franchise commerce.

The result is the bare minimum of dated opticals or 54th-generation re-composits of model shots to put the Enterprise over a new planet. Obviously the CGI upgrades for the hi-def STAR TREK disks mitigates that, but this show doesn't need the revisions.

But here's the real reason:

This show pioneered video sync, so all of the screens were shot live on set. No process or chroma-key. Combine that with the Gerry Anderson Supermarionation process forming the basis of the effects, with miniatures shot live on set.

Starting another re-watch.

The Blu-Ray really is gorgeous. The oh-so 70's design and colors just pop. When I re-watch this, or STAR TREK, it really does show how much more aggressively stylized TV in the 60's and 70's could be. The color washes in dramatic moments, and creative camera placement.
